Home -> RV-4 topic: RV4 vs RV6 Landing Qualities

The last post brought this to mind. I am in the process of buying a
RV4 but have only had flight time in an RV6. How are the two the
same/different on final to touchdown. Any thoughts?

Hello! I have over 500 hours in my RV-4 and a few hours in an RV-6 and an RV-3. One major question is, does the 4 you want to buy have the old landing gear or the new one? The old one like mine is shorter than the newer one. Van saw that the gear on the original design was actually too short, resulting in not being able to full- stall it on landing. If you do, the tailwheel will touch done first with the main wheels still quite a ways up in the air resulting in a bit of a plop type landing with a small bounce. The new taller gear eliminated this. The RV-6 does not have this trait. Even with the shorter gear on mine I consider it to be very easy to land. I have time in a Christen Eagle, Super cub, Stinson 108, Cessna 140, Q-2, T-18, and a Volksplane. Regardless of which type gear you have, the 4 will not slow down or bleed off airspeed as quick as the 6 in the landing mode with flaps down. Some people have added more flap to the 4 to increase the induced drag . Don't take this as though I am saying the 4 is bad! This differance is very subtle and takes some flying time in the two of them to notice it. I have had mine in a 1000 foot backyard grass strip in Vermont ! The 4 is an excellent airplane! Hope this helps, Any questions feel free to ask me...... I flew in the back seat of a friends RV-8 with a controlable prop.........WOW ,what a differance! That thing slows down NOW! We were on final and I thought we were kinda high, he just pulled the power and prop back and it came right down no problem. I was impressed , I don't have any time flying that kind of prop. Hope this helps you..... JeffThe last post brought this to mind. I am in the process of buying a

Deane;

Not much, the visibility is much better in the RV4 but essentially
the same flare picture and rudder response. I have several hours
flying a couple of different RV6's and I didn't like them. Each to
his own right? Kinda like the diff between a Citabria and a C-140.
You will DEFINITELY like the RV4 better...

The 6 seems to stop flying quicker than the 4, just before you touch, while in the flare, the point that you loose lift seems to just go faster, not a bad thing, but seems to handle the same while on the ground. Just need to get used to a little less visibility over the nose, unless it's an "A" then you just forget what I wrote.
