Hi,
I know this must have been a long time ago for some of the more
experienced builders, but does anyone have any advice/tips regarding
building the Empennage jig ? I've read all I can and now I'm about to
start getting the jig sorted out. I suppose in a way this is the hard
part ( having the confidence to start). I see in the Avery catalogue
some jig fixing brackets/hinge bushing kit, has anyone used them?
Regards,
Andy

You're right getting started is the hardest part......after that making your first mistake is the next hardest to take.......from there on it will be downhill (but a pretty big hill)......Build your jig level and solid.......that's it..! don't spend a bunch of time building it to building it to close tolerances beacause all it does is "HOLD" your tail and wings while you build them. The other jigs and such are good to have as they help keep things in line......good luck !

It was fourteen years ago for my emp. jig, but I haven't forgotten. The jig
fixtures were'nt available then, but I sure would have used them if they
were. I did the best I could without them, and the (rudder) hinges are not
in perfect alignment now. That's not to say you can't do it perfect without
them, just that I couldn't! I used steel U channel (used for hanging
electrical and plumbing runs) and bolted 2x4s to the channel. I figured that
would keep the jig straighter over the long run. (I built in Michigan, so I
figured the wood would change considerably season to season). Just remember
to keep the rear spar position up high enough off of the jig to get bucking
bars, etc. between the H.S. skin and the jig. The Jig Brackets from Avery
will do the job fine. I just found a couple of pics of the jig, I'll upload
them to RV4 section photos.

Andy,
I used 4" x 4" steel posts, which will not warp. You can also use two
2x4's nailed together so warping
controlled. Once you have the posts set up plumb and spaced apart, as the
builders manual
says, you can put a beam between them, level of course.
If your like me, I took forever getting started but the job is easy. You
just have to start! The jigs that
Avery sells are very useful but you can make them yourself, if you want to.
It's your choice.
Good Luck,

Yes, I have. They are brackets that you screw down to
the fixture and attach to the aileron hinges. These
keep the spar off the fixture and allow you to space
the hinges correctly. Basically, all you really do is
make a horizontal platform out of 2 x 4's . Just make
sure it's level and not warped. Also, I didn't make
my long enough so it was difficult to work on the
ends. Make sure you can move around both ends for
your tools etc. I supported the fixture with upright
2 x 4's in several places between the horizontal beam
and the floor to make sure it stayed level. On the
ends, I took 2 x 4's, cemented them to the floor with
construction glue & nailed them to the floor joists at
the top. The main thing is to make sure it's level and
won't move.
90% done, 90% to go.

Ditto on making it long enough! I remember that situation now.
