Home -> RV-4 topic: Which RV4 to buy

Author: "deanepeters" <deanep@...> Time: Mon Nov 25, 2002 5:08 am PST Link

I have found 2 RV4s that I like both of which are equal in
price, equipment, engine hours, etc. One has dual controls
in back. What is everyone's opinion about having dual controls
in the back of an RV4?

It depends on what you want to do. Are you tyring to teach someone
to fly looking over your shoulder? You sure don't want to give RV4
dual from the pit of the RV4, the visibility is too poor. I don't
have full dual controls in mine, and haven't needed them. Rear seat
heat and passenger footwells are more important for passenger
comfort.

Just like girls, I'd go with the one with big.....cyllinders!

I'd say get the one with dual controls in back. Probably will help with resale one day. I only have a stick and I had to find someone who would fly in the back and check me out and not be able to use the rudder or throttle. Most CFIs are not comfortable without the ability to control the airplane.

Why would you NOT want dual controls if they're available and all other
things being equal?

Scott, that is exactly my point. I am interested in what other RV4 owners
think.
I have had a variety of interesting responses some of which are negative about
the dual controls. I think it would be a real plus for many
reasons. Most two seat
tandem planes I have owned had dual controls and were never a problem. Someone
mentioned that you can not see the panel from the back - that's much like
the J3-Cub.
There were many basic trainers from the 1940's to the 1970's that were
tandem two-seaters
and often the instructor sat in the back. Thanks for the response.

Only had the stick in the back of mine, but did fly one with dual controls and I would half to say that it depends on how good the installation is and how well they work. You should ride in the back and try to use them, you will see what I mean.

Well, Scott, I am taking my BS stick out as I am flying my granchiles and that control system is sooo sensitive that when the kiddo sees something, turns to look at it, bumps the stick with his/her knee(!)---- this actually happened close to the ground when a deer popped up adjacent the runway on landing--- a roll is promptly initiated. Just one incident like that is plenty.
I do have rudder pedals in back, but no throttle. I have thought of some quick-disconnect throttle and stick set-ups, but haven't come up with them yet.
Also, there's the room question for the backseater on trips. My wife says she would enjoy more "stretching space" so she could change her sitting position a little. I rode back there and heartily agree a little more room would be just the ticket.

I agree with Scott. Why wouldn't you want the one with dual controls?
I think I can honestly say that every single passenger I've taken up
in mine has flown it for a bit - for a nervous passenger, it's nice
for him/her (usually a 'her') to feel they have SOME control...It
also feels less like YOUR baby and more like OUR baby if the
wife/girlfiend/Playboy Bunny can play with it too...

But as was mentionned previously, I would prioritize empty weight
over this (and horsepower as well, actually)...

Cheers,

Mike

Scott is right. All things being equal why not. Think about all your
buddies that would like to "fly" an RV, or the RV's you would like to
fly not ride in. Casey Roszell

Scott;

In my humble opinion, the RV4 wasn't designed to be a "dual
cockpit" airplane. It was designed for "giving rides to friends"
from my 89' demo video. I have given ALOT of rides in five years and
the back stick is plenty to give the "rv experience" to friends...If
the airplanes are truly equal, engine and prop would override any
cockpit stuff...
