I checked two older guys out in their new RV-4 from the rear seat.
They were both oldtime taildragger pilots - just rusty . I certainly
wouldn't want to start a primary student or a 'trainer wheel pilot'
from the back seat.
just my 2c worth.

Does anyone know if Van's ever did transition training in a 4 prior to the 6?

I've been around Van's sense 1980, and Mike Seager is the only person I have ever heard of being associated with vans and he has a 6 only. When you say transition training, do you mean from a nose dragger to a tail dragger? I agree with Bob, I checked two people out in my 4 and all I had was a stick in the back, first landings were at what used to be Mather AFB and I had 250ft wide and 13K long. The guy who bought it did great, he was currently flying a Luscumbe, the other guy was a little rusty and was buying a 3, so I thought I would be a nice guy and let him try the 4. I didn't think I had the nerve to let him try my local runway, we lost a little rubber off the side of the tires, but he did improve after a couple of landings, at least he did fly the 3 successfully.

I'm pretty sure that if you get checked out in the 6 you won't have any problems in the 4, out of the 4, 6, and 8 that I have flown the 4 was the best handling on the ground for me.

Negative ghostrider. When I bought my tail kit in 89', the RV6 was
still new and the only way to get an RV4 ride was to beg. The first
RV I ever flew was my own RV4 on the test flight. I was blessed with
ALOT of tailwheel time though. Even with all that though, it's an
easy airplane to fly, much easier than a Luscombe or Pitts on the
ground.
