have been to a couple of flyins and have seen tons of pics of flyins
and it seems to me that we really need to get the younger people
involved more I myself am 32 and everytime i goto the local strip i
am the youngest there so much so that i feel grandsonish lol i am in
the process of buying my first plane and it happens to be a RV-4 my
father and i will be building it togeather we will keep you posted! I
myself have been doing my part to get younger people involved my
sons's love going up every chance they get! I now have a year of
flying under my belt with 120hrs and cant belive i didnt start sooner
I think the future of GA is in jepordy and without getting the
younger guys=gals involved there is a serious risk to ther freedoms
of flight I myself cannot remember in my life time a law that was
passed that gave us more rites! can you? So now that i am off my soap
box HEHE i am new to this group and will be here forever you guys

Hi Dave

If you stop and think about it you will figure out why you find a lot of the over 50 crowd at air shows. Most people are in school until they are mid 20's and then get married. Then come children and all of your dreams are put on hold. I have found that most of the time you can't afford to build an airplane until the kids are out of the house and you have the extra money and time.

speaking for myself only.........I found that yes there are the house payments, car loans and all the rest of it.....but if you wait till things are ideal you are never going to do it. As for kids I started my Rv when my kids were small (oldest in grade 1) and this was great as they don't cost you a lot of money at this age and they are usually in bed by 7:30 which gives you a lot of time in the evening to work on the airplane (baby monitor is an essential tool). I guess what I am trying to say is.......trying to pick the perfect time to start is difficult at best and there will always be something getting in the way of getting started.........Although each case is different....but...If you don't start you'll never finish.... Work through all the little obstacles as they are thrown in front of you.......happy building!

Marc
One thing you didn't factor in, the wife's, there are a lot of airport widow's out there. To have a wife that goes along with building and spending is a rarer than you think. I would say that a strong 80% of the men I know that fly or build and fly, rarely bring their wife's to the airport. I like you am very lucky, I started my RV-4 before the first one was even in the oven, it flew when he was 4. My wife not only likes to fly but she helped in the construction also. Yes it was odd being the youngest in the EAA chapter.

Keep it flying, Randy

i would have to agree there is never an optimal time> however i wasnt
speaking of building alone more that in general aviation all together
therer alot of misconceptions and generalizations about flying that
need be addresed and i think starting with the younger generations is
the key!

Dave, Be careful, there are alot more younger dudes than you think.
Our RV group has Nine members and our average age is 36. BTW, we fly
the F16 too.
Old Farts, so what, my Dad is 72 and flies my RV4 great, and has
forgotten more about flying than I can remember. Alot of the old
guys I have met ARE trying to get more young guys involved, That's
how I got my RV4 built. Ever heard of the young eagles, that's one
way...
BTW, maybe an old fart could show you how to use the shift key to
make capital letters too....ha!

Getting today's young involved is a challenge, alright! Ever notice how difficult it is to get one interested in actually doing anything? Seriously, when young, you, I, and almost all the rest here built kites, flying models, gliders, radio-controlled airplanes, etc. What are today's kiddies doing? Video games, killer computer stuff, rap music, etc. I think there is a magnificent gap beyond the old 'gender gap' and if our kids are accustomed to being shuttled from one soccer game to the next or one of any other million activities not requiring they actually do something creative, we can not really expect them to be participants in something as demanding as flying. Nor will they be willing to become committed towards anything on the same level as their parents and/ or grandparents. I have seen a lot of young people walk away from the possibility of flying once the true efforts and labor of the learning-to-fly business is clearly defined. Not many really want to work that hard.
Naturally there are exceptions, but I really think a lot of our kids are mostly interested in getting a lot from a very little and some of us are guilty of creating and nurturing that illusory view of life.
Flying's an 'Old Fart' activity? Sadly, I have to agree to some extent.

I'm in the same boat you're in. I'm also 32 and have a limited number of
hours. I cheated and bought my RV-4.

Jim, I disagree. Having been blessed to be in the USAF for the last
20 years I have seen the best and brightest YOUNG people come and
go. I am continually amazed at the quantity and quality of the kids
coming in the door to fly jets and serve their country. If you're
looking for young, motivated flyers, don't go to airshows or EAA
pancake breakfasts, go visit a Fighter Squadron, Aeronautical
University, or ROTC group.
As far as civilian flying and RV's go, we have seven RV's in my
squadron,(probably a record) all bought and flown by young fighter
pilots. I don't think it was a lack of desire, it was COST. They all
want RV's, they just can't afford them. Also, building a kit is a
HUGE undertaking and out of the question for most kids. Lower
interest rates and aircraft availability sold by "old farts" have
finally brought aircraft ownership into reach of younger, very
talented people.

BTW, both my kids are now in college and both are pilots.
Old fart's sport, yes.
Young fart's sport,too: yes.....

I am still trying to figure out who considers a 32 year old to be
young. Just kidding. I am 24 years old and have been building my 4
since last august. I started about 2 weeks after finishing college
and had about 10 hours in a 152. I received a ride in a rocket and
ordered the tail the next week. I am now installing the engine,
instruments etc. and can tell you why many people my age do not build
planes. $$$. Most of the student pilots in the area are my age so
aviation isn't forgotten. It just takes a while for people to aquire
enough of a cushion to build their own plane. I don't mind all the
old people around building planes 'cause you guys give good advice.
I don't care if you are 20 or 80, just as long as you know what you
are talking about.

If it were only true. I meant August last year. So a year and four months
is where I am at. Maybe my next one will go that fast
