Home -> RV-4 topic: Dipstick on Lyc. O320

Author: "rv4mekp" <kerry.peters@...> Time: Tue Sep 2, 2003 3:07 pm PDT Link

Has any RV4 builder experienced the problem of standard length
Lycoming O320 dipstick poking up through the upper cowl opening and
preventing the oil filler door from closing? I have mounted my
engine (a Mattituck EX320) and fit my upper cowl. With the dipstick
in place and tightened down, the oil filler door is raised up from
its closed position by about one half inch. I talked to the support
people at Mattituck who are sending me a shorter (than standard)
dipstick tube. However, is my problem unique or have other RV4
builders had this problem and how was it resolved?
Thanks,
Kerry Peters

Not a unique problem at all........If the engine came out of a C-172 or some such spam can with a lot of room under the cowl, chances are the filler tube is the long one so they could reach it from the filler door. Twin Comanches (O320-A1B) have a short tube cause the cowl is a lot tighter.......Use the shorter tube for your -4 .....just make sure to shorten the dipstick the corresponding length.....(cut the upper end not the bottom)....assuming you are using the same dipstick. another way to do it is to cut a piece out of the the long tube and join the two ends using a piece of ABS plastic pipe (I had to machine it to make it fit well) and glue it all back together using ABS glue or proseal. I put pop rivets it as well to make sure it did not come loose. hope this helps

Hi there, my 0320 end dipstick was way too long also and to complicate matters it rubbed on the engine mount, shortened and placed on very slight angle by means of a machined neck joiner.

Yep, it will be too long. Cut a section out of the center of the dip stick
tube and use a piece of your aileron push tube you cut off as a splice plate
(i.e. slide the top and bottom ends of the cut dipstick tube together inside a
3" or so section of the aileron push tube. Use proseal to seal it all and a
few pull rivets to hold it all together). Then cut the same length off of your
dip stick and re-mark it accordingly.
This is a pretty common fix for the issue. Let me know if you have any
questions.

I would imagine that all of us have had the problem. Mine was originally way too short (R22 helo engine), so I ordered the proper one for the engine. That was, as you know, too long. So I cut it in the middle, took out a section, sanded it to the proper dia. for a pvc union, and glued it back together. Over a short time period, the glue failed and the tube would spin when I tried to unscrew the dipstick.. I cut a slit in the pvc union and put a hose clamp on it, been holding ever since. I cut the dipstick I had so that the length from the bottom end to the handle matched the original length. Then I made marks as I filled the oil, at 4/6/8 qts. I would think someone has an easier way!

Hi Jeff,
There is an easier way!
Once Kerry confirms that what I have sent him will function to his
satisfaction, I will publish the part numbers of the components that
will work without modifications, on this board.
Good Luck,
Mahlon

Please do! I'd like to change out my gerry-rigged oil tube setup for something that looks nicer.

Mahlon,
I received the dipstick housing extension you sent me. I used it along with
the 2.3 inch long extension in place of the longer housing in RV4
installation. It worked but the OD of the threaded female end of the longer
dipstick housing is in contact with the motor mount. I think this could be
remedied by installing the 2.3 inch extension down at the crankcase and
putting the longer extension on top of it. That way, the large diameter
female end of the housing extension would not end up right next to the
vertical tube of the dynafocal mount. With the dipstick in place and the
top cowling in place, the clearance with the closed access door on the cowl
is about an inch. I did take some photos but haven't got the film developed
yet. When I do, I will scan some and e-mail them to you. I think this
combination will work for the RV4, dynafocal mount, better than the
solutions I have read about from other RV4 builders. It makes sense to
offer the two dipstick tubes you provided to me for other RV4 builders. I
would be happy to correspond to any other RV guys about my experience with
this issue.
Thank you.

Hi All,
What you need to do, to get what Kerry has, is as follows:
Purchase:
1 ea. AEL-12790 tube assembly
1ea. 75735 tube assembly
2ea SL-72059 gaskets
(cost for this from Teledyne Mattituck Services is 93.60 for the
AEL-12790 and 44.40 for the 75735 and $1.80 for the two gaskets, plus
frt.)
Discard the longer portion of the AEL-12790 assembly and screw the
shorter part of the AEL-12790 assembly onto the male end of the 75735
tube.
If the threads on your current dipstick have a OD of 1 3/32" it will
screw into the setup you have made and all you need to do is make
sure the dipstick sticks out of the tube assembly you made, 8" or
less, install it at next oil change and remark the dipstick as you
install the new oil.
If your current dipstick doesn't have threads with an OD of 1 3/32"
then you also need to purchase a P/N AEL-14860 dipstick ( $67.20 from
Teledyne Mattituck Services) trim the length, out of the tube assembly
to 8", and mark upon filling the engine with oil.
If you have any issues with interference of the tubes with the engine
mount structure, gently heating the tube with a heat lamp and bending
the tube very slightly would be an easy way to get more clearance if
it's necessary.
It is important to use the exact P/N's of the tubes, as I listed them,
as the same P/N from a different manufacturer may have different
thread sizes on one end or the other and you may not be able to
install the tubes and or install the dipstick into the tubes. The AEL
parts are from ECI the SL's from Superior and the others are from
Lycoming, they should be available from any aviation engine part
supply source.
Hope this all helps.
Good Luck,
Mahlon
