Hello,
My question is regarding the RV-4 rudder. My RV-4 is
about 13 years old and small hair line cracks have
appeared in various lociations on the left side of the
rudder. Most have been drilled but I believe it's now
time to re-skin the rudder.
To eliminate future cracks are there any suggestions.
Also need suggestions regarding removing the current
skin.
Thanks
Steve Welch

Steve,
Suggest you use 0.020 instead of the original 0.016 thickness skin. Also
recommend extending/tieing the stiffeners to the front spar. Trailing
edge cracking was not an issue with my first rudder. Various solutions
have been presented for avoiding cracks in this area including putting
proseal or RTV in the trailing edge. I scrapped my first rudder rather
try to reskin. The cost isn't excessive and I think you will end up with
a better end product. Good luck
