I downloaded some photos of a change that I made on my RV-4's filter
under "Richard's RV-4". I did not like cutting the side out of my
K&N filter. I have about 40 hours on the change with no problems.
Does anyone have a better mouse trap?

Richard, can I assume you don't have the later FAB Airbox? I had no
need to cut anything on my filter. Also, is there a chance of little
pieces of cork crumbling off over time and perhaps blocking
something critical downstream? Just a thought.

Jeff,
I purchased the plane already built. I call the factory and questioned about cutting the side out of the filter and they referred me to the builder book. There was no indications as I questioned him of any mounting upgrades for my RV4. I am keeping a eye on the installation for any crumbling.

Jeff;

I have never liked the Van's filter box and found during early
testing I couldn't get full power with it. I have seen some RV4's
with Brackett air filters adapted but they were expensive and ugly in
my humble opinion. I scratched my cranium and came up with ram air. I
redesigned a "tunnel ram" with a tight fitting door inside that can
close off the outside air and open a 2" hole on top which has a K&N
motorcyle air filter clamped to a 2" flange. In 1000 hours I have
never had a problem. I close the door on the ground for filtered air
and open it on takeoff for ram air. Since the filter has a metal
frame and sits right under the sump, it gets warm and acts as carb
heat as well. It's get 2" MP extra when open...
