So what do the experts (or average guys) think of zinc-chromate vs. paint vs. alodine, with specific regards to interior surfaces of flaps, wings, ailerons, etc.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of both?
My understanding is that ZC is no longer available, anyway, but there's a substitute. It seems that alodine is lighter and easier to apply than the whole paint process. Is that accurate? Is alodine's properties better regarding corrosion resistance?
If the end-cost difference isn't that great, then I'm willing to pay a little more for something that works better.
I have already purchased a bottle each of Alumietch and Alodine and will bedoing the flaps, but figure I would poll the question to all before I actually do it.

Hi Richard, The z.c. I have seen in service does pretty well as long
as things stay dry.Vertical and top surfaces. If it gets dusty and
wet it will wear out. The zinc is a sacrificial component of the
paint, and it does work. The zinc will combine with whatever
corrosive agents are there before the aluminum is attacked.. Time to
wear out? fifeteen to fifty years, C-207 and DC-6 respectively.
The most bullet proof primer is the stuff Boing uses, I think it is
made by Axon, however I am not the authority on that. I do know that
paint stripper barely has an effect on Boing primer.
Unscratched clad aluminum can last a very long time, maintaining
the unscratched is the trick. I have seen both bare clad and alodine
under failed paint that looked pretty good. My understanding is that
the alodine process, done properly, will provide a microscopic
mechanical bond for paint (or glue). Dabbing with cheesecloth, no
wiping, is what is called out in the MX proceedures I have run
into.I dabbed with a sponge when the parts were to big to dip. I
used a epoxy primer that is no longer made DP70.
Hope this answers your question.
Andrew

You can buy zinc chromate in aerosol cans from Spruce Aircraft. I just
recieved 4 cans.

See my article earlier this month, I like the long process. I live in
highly corrosive air and my RV still looks new, inside and out. Yes,
ZC is unavailable in most places, but I have heard you can still find
it on the internet. Sherwin Williams has a self etching spraycan
primer that works great on the interior parts.
I used PPG variprime on the exterior after much pain and knashing of
teeth in the etch/alodine process, but worth every second.

Tempo Zinc Chromate is definitely available from Aircraft spruce
although I got the Tempo Zinc Oxide primer instead (claims it's less
carcinogenic).
The northeast air is not quite so corrosive and I'm putting it over
an alodined surface anyway. I'll let you know how it is in twenty
years.
