Home -> RV-4 topic: Rigging and VS/HS

Author: "nauga01" <nauga@...> Time: Wed Apr 14, 2004 6:07 pm PDT Link

I (think I) need to change my HS incidence.
At low cruise (140 KIAS) and forward CG,
the elevator balance arms are ~1 - 1 1/2 inch
above the stab LE. I'd like to raise the HS
LE so that the balance arms are aligned (or
nearly so) in cruise. Can I do this with shims
under the HS forward spar mount and can anyone
take a stab at how much I might raise them?
I'm guessing about 1/8 to 1/4" for starters, and
shimming would make adjusment easier than making
all-new mounts.

Second, I think I also need to offset the VS.
Anyone got an easy way to do this without making
a new HS-410 (the upside-down T-shaped piece that
ties in the VS forward spar, the HS forward spar,
and the aft fuselage deck)? What I'd *like*
to do is enlarge the forward VS spar bolt-holes
to allow some adjustment and rivet a doubler over
it with properly-sized holes, but I'm not sure if
this will be strong enough. Anyone got any suggestions?

Full fuel, just me in the airplane. ~20%MAC CG, forward
limit is 15%, aft is 30%, so fairly forward CG, too.

Dave,

There were quite of few threads in the past on this subject on the RV-list. There have been some folks out there that have adjusted their incidence angle. Before I moved anything, I would recommend putting the aircraft in level attitude and checking the angle of incidence and compare to the design specification. What your seeing does not seem to be typical. I would go back to basics. Check what you have versus the construction dimensions and perhaps have a brief discussion with the folks at Van's.
