Home -> RV-4 topic: Short canopy

Author: "rv468" <smithfam@...> Time: Sat Apr 17, 2004 6:23 pm PDT Link

I am building an early RV4. I'm currently working on the canopy.
My canopy is one of the "short" canopies that were the result of a
production flaw. This flaw was discussed in the Sept. 84 and Dec.
84 RVator. These canopies required cutting and shortening the rear
bow to fit the canopy. I have shortened the bow, but now am faced
with cutting and splicing the canopy skirts to shorten them. It's
that or buy more material and a shrinker to make a custom set of
canopy skirts.
I'm hoping that if anyone went down this road also, they could
tell me how they worked around this problem. Are you happy with
your results? Would you do it any different if starting over?

Thanks in advance,
Cameron Smith

Cameron,

I had the same problem with my canopy. After shortening the bow, I cut the
skirts short on both sides and sectioned in a piece. This can be seen on a
couple of pictures on this web page:

http://www.mninter.net/~kbeene/rv4_canopy.html

I butt spliced the section and used flush rivets into a backing plate on the
inside of the skirt. I used some proseal under the backing plate. Some of
the proseal can still be seen in the first photo.

I shortened the rear bow my taking out a small section on each side behind
the rear crossover. I know of another RV-4 that just removed the rear most
six inches of the bow. He fastened the canopy and skirt to the bow except
in the very rear where the skirt was fastened to the only the canopy using
rivets with washers on the inside of the plexi. He has been flying for
several years without a problem.

My RV-4 is not flying yet but I think my solution will be ok.
