Does anyone know where I can find a list of engine types that fit the
RV-4. I would like an O-320, 160hp with a dynafocal 1 mount. I
started looking and became confused by all the different variants of
engine types. If someone knew of an engine that met the requirements
that was for sale, that would be good too. Thanks.

Generally speaking, you need an O-320-E series( will require piston
change to get 160HP) or a o-320 D series engine that has the
accessory drive pads you need. Most basically a fuel pump pad. If
constant speed operation is on the horizon you will need to make sure
it has a prop gov drive pad as well. All of the A, B and C series O-
320's are conical mounts and the H series is a different style engine
that although is used quite often, some further research into the
particular nuances of that engine, might be in order before
committing to one. Most of the companies that offer new clone type
engine's have a 320 that will glove fit into a RV4. It is a clone of
the O-320-D2A( which is what Vans offers) or D3G.
If you have a particular model that you need info on feel free to
contact me on or off list and I will explain what that model has or
doesn't have to offer.
Good Luck,
Mahlon

I think the 0-320 is the best bang for the buck. Having helped two
friends take the "0-360 plunge" and convert their 0-320 RV4's to 180
C/S...I am content with my long-nose, lightweight simple 150HP auto-
gassable RV4. The conversion to 180 HP cost roughly $1000 per knot
of airspeed increase they recieved. Also the down time, hassle and
fiberglass hacking plus fitting concerns made it a big job and like
Bob Olds said, "I can't stay with them, but I don't lose sight
either.".
Yes, the 0-360 is 3 inches wider and needs more cowl room than the
0-320, different baffle, and is heavier. I am currently building an
0-320 with 9.0:1 pistons, balancing and carefully weighing all
parts, and keeping it simple just like my 1400 hour model currently
flying and should just be an even swap for everything. If you have
questions about the "super 0-320" email me....

I'm using a O320-E2D......another nice fit (low compression
pistons).......the engines with the bendix injector at the back (O320-A1B,
they were in twin commanches for one) are tight and you have to put a mod to
the firewall so that there is clearance for the injector. If you have a
nosewheel I don't think you can make them work......
