Home -> RV-4 topic: Shim on vertical stabilizer spar?

Author: "pittss2cpilot2000" <rv4builder@...> Time: Tue Apr 27, 2004 10:52 am PDT Link

Group,

Some how the rear bulkhead where the VS spar bolt to, there is a
1/4" gap between the top of the bulkhead and the front of the VS
spar. That gap exists if I want the VS spar to be level(fore and
aft). My question is should I let the VS be swept forward to close
that gap, or shim it? The fix I came up with would be to replace the
3/4x3/4 angle with 1"x3/4" to cover that 1/4" gap, and then place a
shim underneat the 1"x3/4" angle(between the bulkhead and spar face)
that would get bolted in place.

Thanks in advance,

Mike Henning

FYI: I saw this "FLAW", it's nothing. If he bolts the VS spar flush
it's maybe 5 degrees of nose low (sweep fore). The LE of VS
interferes maybe 1/2" with the very end of the turtle-deck.
Furthermore, fairings cover the whole deal.

Mike your the most anal builder I've ever met... Please, keep me
honest.

Apparently the bulkhead wasn't oriented properly while upside down in the fuse jig. Has this affected the angle of the tailspring? Just a thought. As long as the vert stab spar is bolted rigidly in place, I wouldn't think that shimming would affect it. I would find that preferable to altering the vertical angle of the stab. (Murphy's first law of unintended consequences, and all that).

Jeff & Bruce,

The rear most bulkhead was screwed to the jig, which was level. The bulkhead where the tail spring mount is bolted onto is level now, as it was on the jig too. That is why I am baffled how this error got introduced. Maybe there was some flex or someting like that that I wasn't aware of.

Bruce, the harnesses are yours when ever your ready to pick them up.

Thanks,

Mike
