Home -> RV-4 topic: Dynon -- Internal Magnetometer ??

Author: "John Walsh" <john_rv4@...> Time: Mon Jan 17, 2005 4:46 pm PST Link

Has anyone had any success using the Dynon internal magnetometer ?
I have a VFR 4 that I recently purchased. I am considering a Dynon
but would like the setup to be as simple as possible.

I'd like the option of "ripping out" the vacuum system so I would
appreciate a reliable magnetic heading from the Dynon.

Thanks in advance

John

I have an early Dynon, and use only the internal magnetometer. The battery
in my RV4 is between my legs, and interferes with the magnetometer
considerably, stressing the alignment curve fitting routine to its limits.
After several alignment attempts(you get a different curve fit heading
adjustment each time you do it), I finally got the heading to +/-10 degrees,
which I consider satisfactory for day VFR. If you are using the Dynon for
IFR or IFR backup, and have any cockpit magnetic interference, I recommend
that you go with the remote unit.

John;

I have never had a vacuum system as I don't like fixing pumps and
found out through research that the pump takes 3HP at 2500rpm to
operate. (2 mags take 4hp)I like electric and am running a TruTrak
electronic T&B that I like alot. I also installed a Odyssey battery
and mounted it on my firewall leaving me a nice space between my
legs, so to speak. I put a hinged door over the hole and now have a
forward baggage area that hols a toolbox, canopy cover, chocks,
small girlfriend...etc. I run a JC Whitney electronic compass/OAT
that works well, $19.95. Good Luck!

Thanks Gary. I will go with the remote unit. Right now, I have a
vacuum system with 850 hrs on it. The AI has crapped out. I want to
pull the plug (so to speak) and just get the Dynon. BTW, 3 month
lead time to get one !!

As far as the "small girlfriend compartment", Man I have got to see
that airplane !!! :-). I have the Odyssey battery on a list of mini
projects for this plane. It weighs 960 right now w/wood prop and it
never hurts to lose a few pounds.

-John, I used the external as my compass was off by about 200' in my
4. Also if you go with the external you can add their OAT and that
will display true airspeed as well as OAT.
To change alt. setting it is very easy & quick. I plan on removing
my round airspeed & alt. soon. I have a Dynon in my 4 as well as an
Ultimate 10-200. Best money spent on either.
