All,

I have been considering purchasing an emergency
parachute for use in my RV-4 espically during
formation and aerobatics. I know it is probabally not
necessary, but it might make me feel better.

Anyways, if any of you have a chute, what make/models
do you reccomend for use in the limited real estate of
the RV-4 cockpit? I assume a model like the
Para-Cushion Back 311 would be best since it has the
chute on the back instead of the bottom, and I'd
remove the cushon on the vertical part of the seat and
leave the bottom part alone. My headset is less than
an inch from the canopy, so I doubt that any chute
that you sit on would work very well unless I replaced
my bottom seat cushon with a smaller one or just a
board. I'm 5ft 11in 180lbs. Any place to get a good
deal on one? Anyone have a used one for sale?

Thanks a bunch and happy flying.

Here's a link to a chute I'm considering. They sure
are expensive:

Luke:

I'm 6'2", 220 and have yet to find a parachute that I can strap on and
still fit in the RV-4 cockpit. I wouldn't buy anything until you make
sure you can fit in the cockpit with it. The chute companies are pretty
user friendly at the airshows. I tried four or five different chutes in
the plane at Oshkosh. Unfortunately, none would allow for dual occupancy
with the canopy down. I have a hanger mate that has a very thin backpack
that he uses with his Pitts. It has come the closest. Not sure of the
manufacturer. If you don't mind an extra 40 pounds in the baggage area,
you could consider going with the ballistic chute and ride the remnants
down.
I may be misinformed, but I can remember only one RV-4 that went down
with structural failure. If I remember the incident correctly, there
were two instructor soles on board and they broke the horizontal tail
inverted with negative G's. I take a bit a comfort knowing that a.) I
built the plane and b.) no one has managed to break an RV-4 yet. Thesis
doesn't hold for midairs. :) That being said, if I could fit a chute
inside, I would probably have one.

Cheers,

Tom Brown

I have a Strong 304 seat-pack parachute in the front
seat of my RV-4. There is no other cushion - I sit
on the 'chute, the chute sits on the seat floorboard.
Most of my height (6') is in my torso, and there's
some, but not a lot, of clearance between my headset
and the canopy. I tried a backpack chute first,
and that put me so far forward that my head hit
the downsloping part of the canopy and I didn't have
clearance for full aft stick travel.

The best thing I did was *borrow* a backpack and
seat pack chute and try them before buying. Any
way you can do it, since there's so much variability,
I wouldn't shell out that kind of money without being
absolutely sure it was going to work.

Hi Luke,

If you are flying aerobatics, you are required to have a chute on. I have
ordered two chutes for my -4, both are Softies. For the back seat I ordered
a "Softie Mini"(just a regular back pack type chute). For the front seat I
had a custom chute made up. Softie offers a chute that they call the
"wedge". It is 3" thick at the bottom and a 1/2" thick at the top and is
designed more for a Pitts Special. I am 6'2", and leg room is important to
me, so I had them make the bottom 1/2" thick and the top 3" thick. Is what
that does for me is allows the hinge point on the front seat back stay where
it is, and I keep my leg room. To compensate at the top of the seat, I
fabricated two mounts(removabe pins) that hold the top of the seat back on
the back of the roll bar. Quick, easy and comfortable. The front seat chute
was about $1750(but that was with ejector straps[if you land in water, you
will want them, ask me how I know], a carry case, monogramming[RV4], wool
back pad, knife built into risers to cut shrouds, and some custom colors to
match aircraft).

Luke, The strong parachute company in FL will make you a seat pack
with a pad for the RV4 floor complete with slot for the spar. Great
folks...
