Hi,
I'm just about to move on to my fuselage construction.
Does anyone have any good tips/ advice before I start?
Is the Rear fuselage to Horizontal Stab that critical for dimensions?
My H/S front to rear spar distance is a little larger than those
called for in the plans.
I'm also planning for rear pedals and throttle control.
Do members of this site plan to jump to the Doug Reeves site in time?
Thanks,
Andy

Andy;
I think one of the most important things is to measure the distance
between your wing spars and cut a stick to this exact length. Keep
the stick between the 1 1/4" wood spar stub you have in bulkhead 404
and the rear spar fitting. This distance MUST be correct or your
wings won't slide into place.
Another point is the height of the rear spar fittings above the
fuselage jig. Those dimensions were hard to find on my drawings but
they are important to setting the incidence angle of the wings later
on .

When you do the canopy,if you follow the plans your canopy lock will
work BACKWARD !! The plans make the lock lever go BACK to lock.
I built mine (Both RV-4's) to work in the standard fashion
(Everything FORWARD to go).

Andy,
I'm on my engiine installation now. My kit is an early one (#68)
that I purchased partially completed. I have a couple bits of
advice – hope it helps.
1. Take the time to set up the fuselage jig accurately. My
fuselage had been started when I purchased the kit and it was built
straight. Being close to finishing the fuselage, I can see how any
misalignment or twist would have a domino affect with later
construction.
2. Be ABSOLUTELY positive that the front and rear bulkheads of
F404 don't shift out of alignment during construction. If not
held
in place with a spacer to simulate the spar, they can shift during
the riveting. My kit had this problem when purchased. Some of my
spar bolt holes were out of alignment by 3/16". The only way to
repair mine was to replace the entire F404 assembly. This was a
huge task since it had to be match drilled to the wing spars. I
made a spacer for the new assembly out of 2 pieces of high density
particle board with a piece of thin cardboard sandwiched between
them to match the spar thickness. I drilled this spacer for all the
spar bolt positions. I kept the spacer and the spar splice plates
bolted together during the "reconstruction". It turned out
very nice. If you're just starting your fuselage – keep this
in mind. I can't emphasize this enough.
3. If you are long-legged and decide to move the front seat
back, be careful how far you move it. According to the manual you
should be able to move it 2 inches. On my kit I couldn't move it
quite this far or the roll bar would interfere with the canopy
bulkhead.
4. If you are building an early kit you will need to replace
the motor mounts (WD402 & WD403) from the kit with newer, thicker
mounts from Van's. This is a known weak point on the RV4.
I hope this helps.
