Home -> RV-4 topic: Breathe Deeply....?

Author: "Rob Ray" <smokyray@...> Time: Tue May 17, 2005 2:46 pm PDT Link

Guys,

Anybody out there running the Vans FAB (airbox) on a stock RV4
cowling? I am assembling mine and it appears I will have to trim it
alot both in height and depth. The Tunnel Ram I used for years avoided
clearance problems since it was long and skinny but the new FAB fits
tight under the cowl.... Any words of wisdom?

Rob, are you using the FAB-320 or 360? If it's the 320 that's what i'm installing in my RV-3B. See comments toward the bottom of this page for an idea how to take some height out of it...

I have the stock FAB but didn't have to trim it much. Not very helpful,
just a datapoint.

Rob,

I've got the kit sitting in the corner of the hangar myself.

Please share your results.

What caused you to make the decision to get one?

Rob,
Are you talking about upgrading your 4 or are you building fresh ?

I have a 1988 RV4. There is no air filter of any kind on the plane.
I have the "long cowl" or Fixed Pitch cowl. I talked to Van's about
adding the FAB 320 and was told I would have to cut the bottom of the
cowl to fit it. The plane is painted in Imron. So, what should be a
small project quickly spirals into a big deal.

I still plan to do it. But I'm not looking forward to it :-(
Sorry that's not much help.

John

Hi Rob, I started with a stock 1987 RV4 with no filter. I thought I'd be smart and install the FAB. I found this more difficult than anticipated. To be honest, I had someone do the fibreglass work while I built the airbox. Cut the old airscoop off of the lower cowl and aligned the scoop with the newly built airbox. The airbox was simple enough to build, but fairing the new scoop into the lower cowl took more creativity than I had time for. The scoop was flush riveted into place and then fibreglassed into place.
It came out looking very nice.

Now the juicy part, I did notice that the Manifold pressure was about 1/2 inch higher at full throttle at higher speed. The bad part was that I had to drill out the main jet in the Marvel carb to richen the mixture. I had the cowling on and off about seven times in two days before I had the right mixture. I don't recall how much larger I needed the main jet, but the plane was running lean of peak at full throttle and misfiring.

If I can find any notes about drill size, I will let you know.

My disclaimer is that I did all this about 6 years ago.

The airplane ran beautifully before the FAB and took a lot of effort to make it run as good after. I am happy with having filtered air into the engine all of the time.

See ya!

Frank Britton RV4 sn 853.

Rob,
I am running the FAB on my RV-4. I've got a 1994 cowling (Matt
Dralle's old one) around an O-360-A1A, so things were tight to begin
with. I cut off the bottom of the cowl and installed the fiberglass
scoop, but unfortunately it still hit the bottom of the FAB (the old
cut it off twice and it was still too short trick). Anyway, I ended
up
modifying the bottom of the scoop by molding a new contour in clay
and
fiberglassing over the whole mess. I gave the FAB a nominal 0.5
inches
of clearance. The other issue I had was that the slope of the FAB
was
too great for the location of the air scoop. That is, the inlet of
the
FAB was well above what I could reasonably route an inlet tunnel to.
Sooo, I cut the FAB snout and reduced it's upward slope. I included
a
couple of really lousy pictures of the whole thing in the files
location under N360AD. (Don't have one of those high dollar cameras
like Doug Reeves) BTW, I am using stock jetting from the factory with
no problems.
Good luck!

Oh by the way, my rv4 has an 0-320E2D (stock), the long fixed pitch cowl and is otherwise a stock airplane.

Randy, Frank, Scott, Dave, John and Andy,

Thanks guys, what a great site. I ran my new 0-320 last night with
9.5:1 compression and my old carb with no air cleaner at all, and no
cowling. VAROOM. Smooth as silk on my old Jeff Rose ignition and Denso
spark plugs (airboat). The mag is not working at all, so I pulled it
for closer examination. I am staring at my FAB 320 after trying to fit
it for hours realizing that the Narrow Deck 0-320 and wide deck have
the carbs in 2 different spots on the sump. The new engine places the
carb 8 inches from the front of the scoop and just like you guys said,
it's very close to the bottom of the cowl.It appears I will have to
trim the fiberglass bowl to put the throat in a "angle upward" to meet
the cowl scoop inlet. More growling and grunting...
I may just go back to my tunnel ram which worked very well for 1400
hours. It has a trap door inside I can close off outside air and
breathe through a K&N motorcycle filter mounted on top of it for ground
ops of high dust. I do love a challenge though and since I already have
it out of the "bag", I may just see if I can make it work, just for
grins. Thanks for all the help!!!!

RR
