This sounds interesting. Do you mean that your "carb heat" has a
filter ? That's what it sounds like. Maybe I'm misunderstanding.
Gotta picture ? That might make a good short term alternative to the
FAB. I think I have the same setup. Basically a trap door that
closes off outside air and allows the engine to breath air from the
engine compartment.
Just an observation: Having purchased a late '80s era -4, it is
amazing how well these airplanes can run for years and years w/out
many of the latest "refinements". Makes you wonder sometimes if all
this stuff is really needed......

Hi John,
Yes, my alternate air is both heated and filtered. The K%N filter
has a metal chrome frame just like one sitting on a Cars carburater
except it is now on top of my tunnel ram underneath the hot sump
with 2 inches clearance. It worked well the few times I have had
carb ice. Inflight at full throttle opening the flapper valve to ram
air give me 2" MP. Maybe simple is better...
