Home -> RV-4 topic: cockpit ventilation

Author: "andrsnj1" <andrsnj@...> Time: Fri Sep 2, 2005 12:39 pm PDT Link

It's time to think about cockpit ventilation. I have read about and
spoken to other RV4 builders who say that maximum ventilation is a
good thing. I am considering putting 4 NACA vents in my canopy
skirts, 2 for front and 2 for rear. Does anybody have any
suggestions or ideas about this? I also spoke to an RV8 builder at
an air show a week or so ago. He was from Atlanta, hot. He
recommended some kind of ventilation coming from the front. He
plumbed in something from his firewall area although I didn't get a
good look at it. Is there any other placed I can get ventilation
besides the skirts? Another word about my canopy clamps. I don't
know if my canopy is atypical but I have such small amount of
plexiglass along the sides that my edge distance for rivets would
have been very small. I suppose I could have kept trimming the ends
of the canopy until it dropped down further but then I might have
had problems with it being too low and also not fitting the frame at
the front and rear. At this point I plan on going forward with my
clamping scheme. Maybe I will come across a reason to discontinue
this plan further down the road but everything looks good so far. I
have 37 of these clamps along the edge of the plexiglas and each one
has about a square inch of surface area on each side of the
plexiglas. If you work out the numbers my clamps will have to hold
35 pounds each or 35 pounds per square inch, 17.5 pounds per square
inch if you consider both sides of the plexiglas, given the 1300
pounds of lifting force on the canopy that was previously
specified. This will be greatly reduced with the addition of the
glue along the entire length of the canopy frame to perhaps zero.
Also since there will be about 3/16 inch gap between the skirts and
the plexiglas created by the thickness of the clamps this will be
filled in with more sealant. So I will have a very large contact
area between my skirts and the plexiglas all of which will be sealed
up. this will further drop the load on my clamps and distribute it
along the outside of the plexiglas. The other glued area was along
the inside of the plexiglas and outside of the frame tube. I
located a bucking bar that will fit in the small space between the
plexiglas and the "wing" of my clamp which will allow me to buck the
rivets holding on the skirts. Thank you for your input, it is
appreciated.

Do you have any photos of this? I have never run across any NACA
vents in the wing.

I am no expert on this having only ordered an RV4 kit a few days ago, but I did notice there is a new option that many '4 drivers may not be aware of. With the RV10 VANS have announced a new vent option.

VENT SIDEWALL KIT 2 PER KIT/RECTANGULAR $18.00

Its a little door that opens as a scoop as fart as I can see.

In the blurb on their web site they indicate it to also be suitable for the -3, and -4. There is also a picture.

Just something else to consider, and hardly expensive. Steve.

I checked out those vents. It looks like they would provide a lot of
air. It specifies that they are for the rear seat. Does anybody know
why I couldn't put in 4 of these in my canopy skirt, 2 for the front
and 2 for the rear?

'Spoke to Vans about this at OshKosh. My '4' was purchased complete
but I need to add more ventilation. They say the area near the
canopy skirt is low pressure and NOT suitable for vents. They
suggest NACA vents in the bottom of the wings, like the new models
OR placing them aft of the firewall and just below the cowl cheeks;
with hoses led aft to the panel or just under the panel. According
to them, the space is small but large enough to place the vents and
it will be very effective.

I sent an email off to Van on this subject. I also bought 4 vents
that hinge out into the airstream. My current thinking is to install
2 vents on each side of the fuselage in the side skins high and close
to the side rails. These vents won't go on the skirts because the
skirts are curved. The skirts I guess are a low pressure area but the
side skins I don't know about. Van's guy is going to do the same
thing on his RV4 and recommends this method. Since they actually
hinge out into the air stream they should supply plenty of air even
though the fuselage sides may be in a low pressure area. I don't
think I will need any scat tube since the air will be available right
next to the occupants. This seems like the simplest way to go.

I bought two vents from Larry Vetterman at Vetterman
Exhaust (about the size of a silver dollar) and
mounted them on the left side of the canopy skirt. One
for the pilot and one for my wife in the back seat.
They do a very good job for their size and you can
controll the amount of air that is let in. bob king
