Help!!! I and my partner bought an older RV4 with an
overhauled 160HP 0-320 0n it about two years ago. The
plane sat for a few years-don't know how many-was
supposedly run on the ground periodically- we ran it
ourselves while we were re-skinning the bottom of the
wings(MICE!!). The engine has only 130hrs since it was
majored, but since the thing is close to flying now,for
some reason it doesn't want to start like it used to.
The carb was removed and cleaned--had some fuel vent
line issues that were remedied--good fuel flow, fire.
Starts are un-pedictable,usually slow, and restarts
worse than that. Thought somebody out there may have
had some experience of a similar nature?? BUmfuzzled:

there a drain in bottem of air box best to open to 1/4 inch, did you
clean points in mag run some 320 wet dry or 400 paper dry, do not wet
what type of mag bendix or slick ? does the engine have a good loud ckick
when the engin is pulled thruogh ??? mag impulse coupling on the left mag

Tom,
One thing you might check is to make sure your P leads aren't switched
with the left plead going to the right mag and the RT plead going to
the left mag. This will cause hard starting with a cold engine and even
worse starting after the engine is warmed up.
Easy to mess this up, if you aren't paying close attention, with
similar results to the symptoms you mentioned.
Good Luck,
Mahlon

I'll drink to that. I did that exact thing when wiring up my engine.
Started fine for about a year and then got progressively worse. Took about
15 minutes of wire checking to find it. Took much longer to kick myself in
the butt.

THanks to all for the good info--since my last, we
stumbled(literally) onto a bad spring in the impulse
coupling. Starts and runs fine now. Very close to
getting up & up.
