I haven't gotten my propeller yet. I put the optional cut out in the
firewall to enable the use of a constant speed propeller but I'm not
sure if I want to go that way. There are several brands out there,
Hartzell, MK and aero composite as well as several brands of wooden
props. I like the idea of wood since it is much cheaper and won't
break the engine in case of a prop strike. Does the added efficiency
of the constant speed prop make it worth the added expense and
complexity? The headquarters for Aero Composite is actually about 5
miles from my house. I have visited their "factory". It's just a
whole in the wall that you would never see unless you knew exactly
where it was. They seem to have good props though but they are new and
don't have much experience other than from working at Hamilton Standard
that made props for big airplanes. Does anybody have any input they
would like to share on this subject?

I'm also going with a fixed pitch and originally planned on wood until I saw the Catto props. Wood core, composite shell, and real good reviews from RV-ers I've talked to.

For what I have been doing and intend to do, the Sensenich wooden prop is
handling my 180hp -4 just fine. I was going CS this spring, but three of my
flying buds- one with a Cessna 337 twin, all had to have their CS props
either replaced or rebuilt. After witnessing their downtimes and expenses, I
elected to 'keep it simple'.

I have a Prince Aircraft Prop on my 160 HP RV4. It has a wood core,
overlayed with carbon fiber, with droop tips. I like this propeller. It is
very smooth running and light. It was not cheap, but it is well made.
Prince aircraft is located in Ohio. I believe you can find their phone
number with an internet search. Another reason I like this prop is that
Lonnie Prince, owner of Prince Aircraft, usually keeps at least one O-320
and one O-360 prop built for RVs in stock and ready to ship. I got mine 2
days after I ordered it.

I'm running a Catto prop on my RV-4 too. I'm very pleased with it
and with Craig. He can be hard to get hold of at times but he is a
good guy. Just bear in mind this guy lives in a real live log cabin
in the woods in the Sierra Nevada foothills. I went to pick up my
prop in person and he was a warm and friendly host. That goes a long
way in my book. That and his props are works of art. You'd
definitely be happy with his prop.

Keeping it simple is a good idea especially when you're dealing with
airplanes. Does Sensenich still make wood props?

Go back a few weeks and this discussion was a thread of interest then
too. After five different props over the last 10 years I agree with all
of the above. I have flown several C/S RV's and yes, they do accelerate
and climb better, and overall performance is enhanced, at a cost.
However comma, simplicity and cost are a factor for everyone these days
and if you do aerobatics the Sensenich metal isn't recommended. My
crankshaft won't accept an oil pressure C/S and MT is the only electric
C/S out there and is a great prop. MT doesn't recommend acro with it. I
do acro every single flight and it also cost's almost seven grand. So,
stick with what works for your budget and airplane and type of flying
you do. With FP the extension, pressure plate, prop and spinner will
total about $2,000. You can sometimes find one used in the RV8R for
alot less.
The best wood props I have tried for myself and other RV4 guys have
been the Margie Warnke Claw (she is now retired)Craig Catto's 2 blade,
Gary Hertzler composite (my current), Ed Sterba, and Bernie Warnkes ACS
(almost constant speed)and the Prince P-tip. (Bernie died five years
ago). The sensenich wood props are made right down the road from me and
are well made and give good performance. I think for the money you
can't beat the Catto or Gary Hertzler. The simple, 160HP RV4 with a FP
wood prop is(still) a great airplaneand performs very well for a
reasonable price. Good Luck!

Scott,
Craig has a short mountain airstrip about 1/2 mile from his cabin
and I landed my RV4 there while testing my new prop. I was the first
RV4 with a Catto. Craig treated me like royalty as well and backs
his product up 100%. Like Gary Hertzler, Craig initially made props
for the EZ crowd and built them to handle damage in flight. One of
Craig's 3 blades was on a Long-EZ high over the Rockies when part of
an exhaust pipe came off and went through the prop. The guy noticed
a "thunk" and a bit of vibration but nothing extraordinary. Upon
landing he found a 2" chunk gone from one of the blades. He called
Craig, described the damage and was able to fly it home and get it
fixed free of charge. Had that been a metal or purely wood prop the
end could have been much different. I really like both my props, the
Catto and the Hertzler, I put a thin strip of electrical tape on the
leading edge If I see rain in the forecast, otherwise they are
bulletproof and maintenence free.
One side note, MT also makes fixed pitch props and they have their
famous leading edge protection and warranty as well...

Whirlwind makes an excellent, USA made 3-blade prop. They
specifically designed the "150" and "200" versions for RV type
aircraft. Their blades are pure composite, nickel leading edge no
wood inside from a patented process, very strong. They have a cool
website www.whirlwindprops.com with photos.
Right now if you have $7,000 burning a hole in your pocket and want
constant speed it would be a tough call bewteen the Whirlwind, MT
and Aerocomposite props. All are light, strong and work very well on
an RV. I wouldn't rate the Hartzell as it weighs 75 lbs and has RPM
restrictions. MT has the only electric C/S for us solid crank folks.
Soooo, ask yourself who will be around in 10 years and go with it.
MT has been around for 50+ years, Whirlwind about 25, Aerocomposite
less than 5.
Your call...
