Jan - I did the same thing a few weeks ago. The .020 emp skins are an option. After consulting this community I upgraded mine to .020 (from .016 I think) to reduce the possibility of cracking.. It is around $8 per skin I think. You can find the details on the parts list at VANS online web store.

I was under the impression that the 0.016 skins were fine if you were
using 150 or 160 HP. I thought that the people that were having trouble
with the 0.016 skins were running 180 HP. Now, why someone would think
they need a 180 in an RV-4 is beyond me when they could build a -8 that
was designed for the higher HP ;)

Scott - I dont know. I just asked the question and got mixed answers. All in all it did not seem a big issue. I am weight conscious but it weighs little. It was cheap and it gives me peace of mind. Also, whenever I wash the -9 I am horrified by how much the emp skins flex. Regards, Steve.

Amen Steve. There is a reason the RV-8 and HRII have .020 on the
tail feathers, it's stronger. My .016 rudder has 2 hairline cracks
between rivets on the bottom after 1500 hours and I stop drilled
them and put a circular MHWH tape patch over the crack. Scott, if I
had it to do over I would buy the .020 skins from Van's, they aren't
much more expensive and worth it.

Guys, before you automatically go to .020 skins consider that surfaces constructed CORRECTLY with .016 can be very durable. In building my RV-3B I studied this fairly extensively and talked at length with Tom Green, Van, and several local builders who had order ships. My conclusion was to go with .016 and save the weight. I've posted further details on my own thoughts at...
http://www.romeolima.com/RV3works/Airframe/airframe.htm#Empennage
BTW, if you'll be installing an O-360 I'd go with the .020 skins, but otherwise stay with the .016 flavor.

Amen Steve. There is a reason the RV-8 and HRII have .020 on the
tail feathers, it's stronger. My .016 rudder has 2 hairline cracks
between rivets on the bottom after 1500 hours and I stop drilled
them and put a circular MHWH tape patch over the crack. Scott, if I
had it to do over I would buy the .020 skins from Van's, they aren't
much more expensive and worth it.

answers. All in all it did not seem a big issue. I am weight
conscious but it weighs little. It was cheap and it gives me peace
of mind. Also, whenever I wash the -9 I am horrified by how much the
emp skins flex. Regards, Steve.
