I would be interested to know if anyone has made a door in the F-428 so the area under can be used for storage? Or is the F-428 structural?

Thanks Steve.

Todd - yes they are the steps. Clearly they would have to be beefed up further if split, but they also seem like a nice storage area. I was just concerned because although I have seen them used this way I have also been told they are structural. I was hoping to find someone who had looked into this. Thanks, Steve

Hi Steve,
First congrats on ordering an RV4 and selling your 9A.(trainer) The
RV4 is far superior to all the other RV's vice the RV3 and I have been
fortunate enough to fly them all. Put a strong 0-320 with 8.5 or 9.5:1
compression and an MT or other composite lightweight prop, keep it
under 1000 lbs and you have a Rocket ship. There is a reason Van owns
an RV4...
Concerning additional baggage, I hinged my upper baggage area door to
allow access to the aft fuselage. Last year I stretched a nylon net
from Wal Mart between the rear fuselage upper longerons attaching with
tie wraps, forming a shelf. I put my travel guitar back there and light
stuff such as sleeping bags. My buddy Dale modified his RV4 baggage
area by removing the "shelf" (F428). Instead, he built a small box over
the elevator bellcrank and floored everything else level with the
bottom of the fuselage back to the bulkhead then put a vertical panel
over the bulkhead. This almost doubled his baggage area.
I hinged the door over my battery box. I used an Odyssey PC680 battery
and mounted it on the firewall, leaving the battery area as a forward
baggage compartment. I easily have the same baggage area as an RV8
now. I recommend you not build a center console and put all your
instruments/radios on the upper panel as I did. This is very easy now
with the Dynon EFIS and engine monitors.
With all these mods you can carry as much as you "need" within CG
limits. Moving my battery out front and putting my tool box, canopy
cover, chocks, tiedowns and spare oil bottle all in the forward
baggage, I now have ALOT of room in my 2 back baggage areas for bulky
light stuff and no CG worries. You also can hinge the panels on either
side of the stickwell creating small pockets for maps and tools. I have
seen 2 RV4's with hinged panels under the back seat creating small
glove compartments.Wingtips have also been made into storage with
removable doors. My rear seat cushion has a small LPU stuffed inside.

The possibilities are endless...Good Luck!

Rob - yes I think the -4 is a good decision. Thanks for making me feel good! The brief flight I have had in it convinced me it is superb.

I am not one for toys in the panel so I should be able to get it below the magic 1000lbs with a c/s prop. Homebuilts are strictly VFR in the UK. My -9A with an MT is lighter than most so I will stick to the same regime wrt weight. It sounds as though even with your - in European eyes - 'free' fuel you dont think an O-360 worthwhile. I lean to O-320, but now and then when I notice both the weight and $ penalty is very little, wonder if I should put the larger engine in?

Is your PC680 in the engine compartement, or the cockpit side of the firewall. On the -9A mine is in the engine cmptmnt and if there is room I would like to do the same again. I have also ordered the bagage box that fits below the instruments. No idea how that will work out....but it was cheap.

You said " You also can hinge the panels on either
side of the stickwell creating small pockets for maps and tools." I am glad you also think so. They are the F-428 - the steps - and appear to be a very convenient location....flight guides etc. Lots of people appear to do it so I was surprised to get this from Scott when I asked about htem and the battery box cover. " 428 is considered structural however, the battery cover is not." I will go back to Kreuger in due course since I cant see this is correct.

Thanks again,
Steve
