I'm starting to install fiberglass and am not happy with the way the rudder
fairing fits to the rudder (RV6). Has any got any suggestions for a good
clean installation? I'm using the fairing with the option for a light so I
want to be able to remove it if necessary.
Thanks.

Hi Jeff:
I had the same situation. Van's fiberglass has a lot to be desired. What I did with mine was fit it up the best I could then drill for the 1/8" flush rivets. I bonded some thin sheet metal strips on the inside of the glass. Then I bonded the whole thing together and put the rivets in. After the adhesive was cured I used some super fill and faired everything in real nice. I bonded a piece of 1/8" aluminum around where the light goes. I faired this in with the super fill. I then tapped two 6-32 holes so that I could attach the light assembly. What I wound up with is a good looking rudder fairing with a removable tail light. Check out my web site www.tomemery.com. I think that there is a pretty good picture of this there. If not let me know and I will email you some close up shots.
Good luck,
Tom Emery

Jeff:
I just checked my site and those pictures aren't there anymore. Check the attachment. Here are 2 really good shots of what I was saying.

Thanks Tom,
My biggest problem is that the RV6 has you install the sheet metal strips
to the bottom of the rudder then attach the fairing to this. What you end up
with is the fairing sticking out past the rudder skin and I hate to putty
that up since it is so thick. I'll try and take a picture and send it to you
since it's easier to see what I mean that to describe it.
Thanks again

Jeff:
Those two strips that hold on the fairing go on the inside of the lower rib. That way you end up with the rib thichness plus the skin thickness. The fiberglass should be close to flush with the skin. Believe me, I've built 27 of them. that's right. I am the RV Tail King of Southern California.

Tom,
I checked and even though it's close I thing my fiberglass is thicker
than usual. When you said you bonded two strip of thin sheet metal to the
inside of the glass, is this in addition to the two strips riveted to the
inside of the rib?

Jeff:
Bond a couple of strips to the inside of the glass. All they do is prevent the pop rivets from pulling through the glass. If your glass is still to thick just sand it down till it's flush with the skin. I don't know if you have the book 21 years of the rvator but it's worth it's weight in gold. There are many tips and tricks in there. Keep working at it. You will get it done and be proud of it.
