How precise are the dimensions given on the plans for drilling
the gear leg on the 6A? When I get 21.75" from the wing to the top
of the gear leg & 42.75" from center of the fuselage to the outside
of the gear leg , the flanges on the gear mount are too close to the
bolt holes in the spar. What am I doing wrong? Any input would be
greatly appreciated.
Thanks L.C.

I drilled my Gear Mounts this past Labor Day. The dimensions are close. I
think mine were about an 1/8" on each side wider than Van's calls for. I
guess from what others have said, most have problems with the flanges on the
mounts interferring with the bolt holes. Van's advised me to go ahead and
grind away at the flange weld to make enough room to get a nut on, as there
is still plenty of "meat" left. There were some places where that is not
easy! I used various grinding stones in my Dremel tool, even when so far at
to "back grind" by putting the tool through the hole and then inserting in
the Dremel and pulling backwards on the tool, using the back side of the
stone to grind with. Others have used some spacers under the longerons on
the sides to bring the mounts inboard a bit. I think, so long as both sides
are the same distance from the center of the fuselage you'll be OK. Good
Luck, I almost went with the -6 and not the -6A because of my perceived lack
of skills in the area. In the end, it all seems to have worked out, but I'm
not flying yet either.

Mine came out pretty close to perfect. I think it is mostly important to get them the same from side to side. What difference could a quarter of an inch make? It could change the angle your fuselage sits on the ground, but I'll bet you wouldn't notice it.
