Hi Guys....

I'm building my instrument panel and plans say either rivets or platenuts to hold the panel onto the angle
backing it. Orndorff says rivet the panel and use platenuts on the skin to panel attachment. What do you
all say who have "been there done that". Any and all comments, suggestions welcome. Thanx mucho. This is
a slider, so I'd like to maximize access to rear of panel any way I can.

Jerry, Sounds like you and I are at about the same point in the
project. I'm just knocking the dust off of the raw panel and my plane
is a slider also. Help me out here... Why would it make sense to
rivet the panel to the ribs but use platenuts to attach it to the
skin? (I'm presuming we're talking about the skin/panel interface
along the top of the panel, where the skin overhangs and "shadows" the
panel.)
Thanks,
Monte

Jerry,
I would recomend that you install the platenuts on the angle and
then screw the panel to the angle rather than riveting it. I riveted
the whole thing, making panel removal impossible, and have regretted
it several times. I really thought that I would not be under the
panel again so didn't provide for access. It is very hard on the
back to lay upside down under the panel with the wing spar across
your back. I have been back under the panel at least 10 times since
first flight back in October 2001. At minimum, make part of your
panel removable.

Jerry,
I used screws and plate nuts on my panel. I also have a
slider. Wire as much as you can out of the airplane,
then get ready to climb under the panel anyway. Good luck

Monte...

You're right, it doesn't make a lot of sense, but since that's what the
Orndorff video suggests, thought I'd run it by the troops first. The
consensus on this list and others seems to unanimously favor riveting the
angle to the cowling, then attaching the panel with nutplates. That's what I
will do, and I'd like to thank all for their input.
These RV boards are sun an amazing resource, yet I know many builders don't
bother to use them, a pity.

I am also at this same stage of construction, I spoke with George O
about "why screw/nutplate the top skin?", his response was that it
wouldn't require the bucker/ee to lay down on their back to rivet
the top part of the panel to the forward top skin. SSOOooooo,
I decided to go ahead and rivet the panel all the way around so that
I'm not thinking about the screws coming lose under my uphostery and
I've decided to use "sub" panels, ie removeable panels, one with my
flight instruments (six-pack) and another for my engine
instruments, leaving just enough extra wire length to remove these
subs and place them onto my lap, and allowing access to the remaining
gauges, radios, etc. thru these large holes. Hope you understand my
basic design here.
