Home -> RV-6 and RV-6A topic: RV-6 questions

Author: "Dave von Linsowe" <davevon@...> Time: Fri Aug 2, 2002 9:18 am PDT Link

I'm a new owner of shiny RV-6. With a couple of questions:

How much weight does paint typically add to the airframe? What effect does
it have on the CG?

Has anyone ever put in a pass-through in the bulkhead behind the luggage
area, for something light, like ski's or model airplanes?

What experience has anyone had with putting antennas in the tips?

Just how beneficial is switching over to a plenum chamber for engine
cooling?

What speed mods give the most bang for the buck?

I've got an O-360 with a Hartzell C/S prop, tip-up canopy, the composite
cowling and the pressure recovery wheel pants. The current empty weight is
1038 lbs. It's got a few antennas (it's full IFR) and a step on the
passenger side. Besides the above items I'm looking at a tail-wheel wheel
pant and replacing the tail-wheel steering chains with the single gas strut
push rod, and I'm considering developing a retractable step to work with the
flaps (if I can keep the weight down).

Other items I'm considering: Flowing the cylinders and raising the
compression, tuned cold air induction with fuel injection (and removing the
scoop on the cowl), electronic ignition and switching to an Aero Composites
C/S prop.

A buddy is building a 7 and I've got to be faster than him. :-)

Thanks,

Dave

The answer to several of these questions is "it depends". There are answers

Kyle,

Thanks for the input. I'm surprised my request didn't generate any
discussion. Is there another RV group?

Dave

Dave,
Congrats on the purchase of the RV6...
My partner and I bought one a few months ago and had some of the same
thoughts as you do. So my info will be from a owner/purchaser not
from a builder!
Paint?....it does add weight, gas is 6lbs and water is 8 lbs I think,
guessing, Paint maybe 10 to 12 lbs per gallon? a couple gallons to
paint a basic plane.....but it is spread out all over the plane so
hard for me to comment on CG effects.

Rear bulkhead had had openings put it it!..check RV List Archives

Plenty of dissussion on antenna in the tips...again archives

Plenum chambers are really neet, they are lots of work! some great
sites of guys that have do it! Find them under "Sites" in the Vans
Airforce Site...Probably where you got the link to the yahoo group
from.

The pressure recovery Pants give one of the largest increases in
speed I've read about but seems you have them already. Your weight
seems pretty light for 180hp with c/s prop and IFR...good for you!

One thing I did was order and read the book from Vans called RVator
21 years .its full of information about the 6.

The single gas strut is something we are looking at too. if you
already have the full swivel tail spring, it will help, as we have
the original non castoring type and we have to pull the tail spring
out to have it modified and it not an easy job! It's on our list of
things to do after we are tired of flying!!!

The retractable step sounds very like work to me...I'd rather be
flying! I've never seen a step on a -6...with the flaps down, it
seems close enough to the grond for a moderate step. A lot of the
6A's have them!

Electronic ignition is a good thing and improves performance and save
fuel too.

Fuel injection eliminates carb heat! and lets you tune it with the
GAMI injectors........I have read about this.

We have wraped our intakes and the exhaust stacks under the front of
the engine trying to keep things cool. We have added air from the
left side cowl to the oil cooler mounted on the right rear firewall
to get oil temps down. We also opened up the bottom of the cowl in
the exit area to allow more air out of the cowling for cooling too.

Good luck with your changes and welcome to the world of RV'sssssssss

Bob,

Thank you very much for the input! I'll keep you posted as to my progress.
I need to put the RV on the back burner for a couple of months while
preparing for a major R/C event in October...

Dave

You might have a glance at Van's RVator over the last year....there
was a caution in a recent issue about buying RVs and believing the
weight and balance papers. Van's wanted new buyers to do their own
weight and balance. I've been around RV-6s for over 10 years and I
my experience tells me that with an IFR panel, an O-360 and a
Hartzell prop, there is absolutely no way, even without paint, that
an RV-6 will weigh as little as 1038. My guess is 1080 and maybe
more. A lightest I've weighed so far, with an O-320/wood
prop/stripped weighed just under 1000 and just a Harzell prop would
have brought it up to about 1040 (the prop for the O-320 is 50 lbs
even, plus about 6 for the governor -- the wood prop with extension
weighs about 15)

I'd recommend you drain the fuel, get a copy of Section 14 of the
Builders Manual, round up the equipment and weigh the airplane
yourself. If it really weighs as little as the papers say, let us
know...I'm always up to learn something new
