Which Prop, Which Engine?
Making the Wrong Match is a Big Mistake; New Software Helps
OrcaStar Software announced its release of new software to give pilots, aircraft owners and builders, mechanics, and students a powerful but convenient new tool for analyzing and exploring engine and propeller performance andefficiency for a wide range of engine and propeller choices.
Engine ‘N Prop 1.0 greatly simplifies the use of engine and propeller performance charts and de-mystifies the “black art” of estimating performance with fixed pitch propellers. Also, Engine ‘N Prop employs user-friendly graphical and “point and click” methods and applies over 100 curves of engine and propeller performance from the public base of aeronautical research. In so doing, it makes available to a broad segment of the general aviation community tools and research which previously were only practical for use by those having extensive technical training.
Said Jeff Struthers, publisher and founder of OrcaStar, “With today’s high costs for general aviation engines, propellers, and fuel, it is important for pilots, owners, and builders to realize the best return on their investments. OrcaStar believes that one important means for improving aircraft performance and efficiency is to make available more powerful analyticaltools such as Engine ‘N Prop that are designed for use by a broad segment of the aviation community.”
The company says the software (available for a free demo download) can help:
a.. Match engines and propellers
b.. Take the hard work out of using engine charts
c.. Estimate propeller efficiency
d.. Select/define propellers by point and click and slider-type controls
e.. Select engines by point and click
f.. Add engines of choice
g.. Estimate fuel economy

One Caveat...right now it's only for Macintosh computers. Mr.
Struthers emailed a reply to me that they will probably develop a
version for PC's based on the responses they are getting. Looks like
a very useful tool for RV builders and pilots.
