Does anyone have an opinion as to where the best location for the
Headphone jacks should be on a -6A?

Hi, Ben,

I put ours on the aft end of the armrests. There's a little bulkhead there, and we plug in beside the pilot's left shoulder/ passenger's right shoulder. It seems to do a good job of keeping the headset cords out of the way of the flight controls.

It's hard to get to in flight, but we've never had to get to it in flight, so all in all, it seems to be a good location.

Ben,

I have a RV-6 (not flying yet) and originally planned on installing the
jacks behind somewhere so the cords would be more conveniently located.
After flying in another RV-6A and realizing that my headsets with the ANR
option have the little control box very close to the jack ends. I decided
that I would install them in my panel very close to the outside edges so I
could vel-cro the little box to the upright right beneath the canopy frame
(slider). Seems like the most sense to me to have that on/off switch and
slider in reach. Just my thinking.

Ben, I fly a -6 with the jack in the lower outside corners, I prefer
it! My hanger mate has a -6 with the jacks between the seats, in the
top crossover.....one day we were up and the radio seemed funny and we
quickly discovered the headsets were plugged into the wrong jacks! wow
was it it pain to change in flight, reaching over the shoulder! Don't
ask me why we didn't swap headsets, because sitting here now writing
this , it seems like the easy thing to do, but it didn't at the time!
So I prefer the panel mount!!
Also, while you are wiring the jacks...make sure you isolate one of
them, can't remember which one right now, but one should not be
grounded to the plane, it needs an oversized hole and a shouldered
washer to keep it centered and not grounded, You probably know that
but thats my 2 cents! Good luck....

Ben,

Hello again. The navaid I bought from you is working great, thanks
again.

We installed our jacks in the lower corners of the instrument panel.
This allows the cord to drape along the side next to your leg and
under your left arm (Pilots side) When not in use, I store the
headphones under the panel, along the side of the fuselage, on a
hook, to keep them out of the way getting into and out of the plane.
It also keeps them out of the sun.

I have them on the panel, near the airvents. Big mistake.
I step on em, hold them up etc. Cord hangs down right where folks
are trying to get it.
I should have done what Dennis did. It is a better solution.

I do think it has alot to do with where you plan on putting your
headsets when climbing in.

Even with em behind you, if you store em on the glare shield, your
gonna have cords running around to step around.

I'd 2nd the panel mount idea. They're easy to reach and it makes
the wiring runs short.

The decision is determined to some extent by where you plan to hang
your headsets. I personally think the best place for expensive
headsets is in the foot well, out of the sun and not so obvious to
thieves.

I put my jacks in the panel, on the outside corners under the cabind
decks on my first and currently flying RV6. I also have flown in
both, and I sometimes fly mine from either seat and have found that
I like the panel location better. Probably because I have a ANR
headset and stick the battery pack into my "pouch" which is right
underneath the panel.

I also am installing the jacks in the same location in my latest RV6
project.

Just my opinion!
