Home -> RV-6 and RV-6A topic: strobe in top of Vert. okay?

Author: "mark" <mark936@...> Time: Wed Sep 3, 2003 10:29 pm PDT Link

Anyone have a strobe in the top of the rudder of vert. stab.?

I was at Van's homecoming and I saw a couple.
Even though I ordered the dual position/ strobe I wanted to know if it works okay mounted up high in the rudder.

Or does it flash or reflect into the cockpit?

thanks, mark

if YOU TAKE CARE YOU CAN SEE IT JUST FOR CHECKING IT IS WORKING
BUT IN FLIGHT you forget it and I hadn't any problem with.

Yes, it's OK and it's the cheapest way to go. However, you're on
your own to figure out a mount for it. The strobe included in Van's
single flasher kit is actually the same one that's normally used on
the wingtip flashers, including even the little teardrop-shaped
aluminum bezel. The high-voltage cable included is long enough to
bolt the power supply in the tailcone behind the baggage
compartment, which is advisable because it's heavy enough to have an
effect on W&B if you mount in the tail.

To answer your other question, yes, is does flash into the cockpit.
You don't notice it during the day but at night it is very
annoying. I made a small aluminum reflector out of .015, and
mounted in front of the glass. At least now it's no more annoying
than the rotating beacon on most production planes.

I still prefer it to high-voltage cables next to the gas tanks or a
heavy power supply in each wing tip.

Thanks for the input guys.

After much sanding, glassing and more sanding I decided to pass and just put the dual strobe down in the bottom of the rudder.

I looked at that nicely shaped vert. tip and said, "Nope."

I sure like the way flashers look up high and just last nigt I realized I hadn't addressed the red rotating beacon in cert. planes.

thanks again, mark
