I have an rv-6a with a 0320 and was told that I could use 91 oct,
auto fuel in one tank as long as I used avgas to take off and land,
is this true? avgas is 2.74 a gallon, and auto gas is 2.11.
Has anybody else done this?
Thanks,...Mike

Different folks have different luck with different engines.
A good rule of thumb is if yours is a 150HP O-320, you can run mo-gas
without problem. The high-compression 160HP engines, likewise a hopped
up high-compression 200 HP O-360 sometimes have detonation troubles.
Of course you could carry around bottles of octane booster...
OTOH, some folks run mo-gas in 160HP setups and report no problems.
A side-benefit is illustrated by one of our chapter member here in
central Texas. He keeps account of how much auto gas he runs through
his 150HP RV-6, and at the end of the year he files some form with the
state government and gets all the road tax back that was part of the
price of the fuel he bought.
Only fair since he didn't use the roads!

Our 160 HP O-320 (and a friend's 180 HP O-360) have successfully used
PREMIUM, high quality, autogas with no problems so far.
When it was done the **RULE** was ... "take off and land on the *right*
tank. AVGAS was *always* put in the right tank and the autogas in the left
tank.
NOT and endorsement. Your mileage may vary. May not apply to your plane.
etc. etc. etc.

I fly N65RV, an RV-6A with O-320 150hp, and burn 91 Octane Auto Gas
as often as possible. I fill up with Avgas ONLY when I am flying
away from home base in Lubbock, Texas, without regard to what fuel is
in which tank. No problems whatsoever over the past 125 hours. In
addition, I used autogas in two different C-182's (Continental O-470)
for over 800 hours with no problems.

about auto fuel we are very sensitive in France, because we pay about
double what you pay in US. Same for the AVGAS. It looks like the problem is
not
to burn the auto gas, the Lycoming accept that w/o problem BUT the damage
are with all the gaskets in contact with the auto fuel, some support some
other don't.
If a specialist can confirm .
