Home -> RV-6 and RV-6A topic: alternator charging intermittenly

Author: son@... Time: Thu Nov 4, 2004 9:49 pm PST Link

Hi All
I have a 6A with the 60A Vans alternator purchased in 11/02 and a 35
ah gell cell battery
the battery was purchased from ACS in 9/03. the plane first flew in
01/04 and has been flown trouble free (relatively speaking) 100 hrs

in the last few flights the ammeter and volt meter indicated that the
alternator is charging the battery intermittently....as a result the
battery was drained down....seeking advice and comments on what might
be the problem...thanks
Son Hoang....So Cal. N64SH

Hello Son, I also recently developed a similar problem in that when I
get into substantially cooler air than what we have on the ground here
in South FL, I first see drops to 13v and then recovery to 13.8 and a
1-2 minute ammeter response showing the battery taking a short
recovery charge, if you will. Then, after longer flight in cooler air,
I start seeing drops to battery voltage followed by recovery to 13.8
and a similar ammeter response. I'm guessing that the low amp (field
supply) connector at the alternator is a poor connection, and poorer
in cooler air. I have ram air ducted to alternator, BTW. Can't imagine
voltage reg on firewall could get cool enough and so quickly after
entering cooler air, to cause this anomaly. Hope this info may be
helpful.....Link RV-6 O-320 w/Hartzell C/S prop. BTW, Never saw this
issue until after I changed to present prop, so probably damaged
connection at alternator?

Hi Son
I just recently had a similar problem and discovered a broken spade
connector in the three connector plug that plugs into the back of the Vans
60 amp alternator.I replaced the broken connector and filled the void with
silicone to minimize future vibration.
So far so good

Thank You Larry, Bill and Gary
After examined all the connections I discovered that the ground cable from the battery to the airframe was not making good connection
I used bolt/nut to attache this cable to the airframe...apparently the bolt is a little longer than appropriate so after enduring many hours of vibration
the connection was no longer as tight as it should be....I added a couple of washers, tightened the nut...everythign is OK again
thanks to all who replied with suggestions...you gentlemen are all great
Son

Son, If that's the bolt that goes thru firewall, I had the same bolt
loosen as well. Also had sound of metal working when pushing down on
wing and discovered other three lower motor mount to firewall
attachment bolts had also lost ALL torque, with cotter pins and
witness marks still intact. Firewall sandwich layesr compressed??? Not
properly torqued originally? I don't know, but fixed now. Rgds, Link
