Home -> RV-6 and RV-6A topic: 0-320 w Hartzell constant speed prop

Author: "stern_allan" <stern@...> Time: Tue Jul 12, 2005 9:04 am PDT Link

Any ideas on how to torque the 5/8 prop bolts on my Hartzell c/s prop
attatched to a 0-320 engine. Special tool it way too expensive to
purchase for minimal time one would use it.

Would anyone have this tool to borrow?

A&P's tell me that they just tighten them. If you want to go the torque rout,
just use a regular 3/4 box end wrench and then use the torque wrench at the
other end, and adjust the troque wrench to take into account the new length of
the moment arm.

Allan,

I'm an AME in Canada ( the equivalent of A&P in the
USA, I'm also A&P rated) and I can tell you that most
Mechanics or Engineers would not just tighten them. Do
it right or do it again!!!! Here is a link to Sky
Ranch engineering that will give you the info you need
on the extension formula.

http://www.sacskyranch.com/mechanic.htm

Just get a torque wrench and work out the extension
formula, torque in a cross or star pattern. This will
seat the prop hub evenly on the Crank shaft and you
won't have any tip tracking problems later.

Hope this helps!

Hi Stern,

Here is a link to Dan Checkoways site on the extension for tightening
the prop bolts. He also has an online tool for calculating the torque
reading with the extension.
