Hi Guys,
Anybody up to the rudder yet? I'm not quite clear on the instruction to use
RTV at the trailing edge of the rudder to join the stiffners. Any thoughts?

Hey John,
Yup, after the stiffners are riveted to the skin, just before closing
up for the final time, i held the skin open and dropped about a 3/4"
round blob of RTV into the inside leading edge of the skin at each
set of stiffners. I had no idea why, but an mechanic friend of mine
told me that it will add stiffness and prevent any vibration. i guess
it is supposed to join each set of the stiffners into one.

Just a quick note about RTV. The garden variety RTV found in hardware
stores has acetic acid in it (smells like vinegar) and this can corrode
aluminum over time. Be sure to get aviation grade RTV from one of the
aviation supply places (Wicks, Aircraft Spruce, etc.). Learned this tidbit
from an A&P while doing owner maintenance on my Cessna.

Some people were getting cracks at the ends of the stiffeners. This may not apply to the new thicker skinned versions but it's cheap insurance.

John,
Get some Permatex UltraBlue 77B as called out in the manual on
page 6-8 under, "joining the rudder skin to the skeleton" paragraph
seven, from your autoparts store. Just drop a "blob" about the size of
a quarter between the stiffners at the trailing edge just before you
crunch the trailing edge.
The idea is that after it cures it will hold the two stiffners
together forming a quasi rib and stopping cracks from forming from the
last rivet.
