Fellow Rudder and Elevator Builders,
I'm having a local machinist make a back riveting plate for me. The
ones I saw Cleaveland Tool and Avery sell looked rather small. If
you could have any size you wanted, what size would you get (and
thickness)?
Remember, I want to be able to pick this thing up and move it .... so
bigger is better within reason.

Ellis,
I got a piece of 1/4" x 4" x 18" steel from my local welder $5.00,
took a belt sander to it and it works like a charm. The 18" is great
for a long line of rivets in the rudder.

Ellis,
I was able to "score" a piece of 15 X 3.5 X .5 hardened steel plate. It was
machined on both sides and has really been nice. The size and weight are
good for handling.

If you go to a (injection) mold maker shop they always have nicely
cut pieces of steel lying around of various sizes. If you tell them
what you are doing, they'll probably just give you something. Any
machine shop should be able to tell you where the mold makers are in
your area.
