I am going to begin construction on an RV7 at the end of this month. I am
trying to limit my initial purchase of tools. Does anyone have a list that
will get me through the tail. I have seen one from Cleveland but got a
little confused when I tried to cross it to Avery's complete RV tool list.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Ron, I think you'll find you will need all the tools in the Avery kit
and wish for more....like the pneumatic squeezer.

Ron,
I went with Avery and I have used just about all the tools that came
in the kit at one point or another on the EMP.

Dear RV-7'ers: (Sure doesn't have the same ring as RV-8'ers, which I was
just about to build, but heh, I like to have my Mrs. along on the
flights..she is a pilot too!)
I bit the bullet and ordered the full kit from Avery. I just finished the
HS and am half through the VS and have already used most of the tools. Bob
Avery spent over 30 minutes on the telephone (he called me back in less than
15 minutes) early on explaining some of the preferred procedures and tool
usage.......and made me feel he would have stayed on for an hour or until I
was through. That is the kind of customer service I like. I had heard he
was (they were) this way, and this was part of the reason I went with Avery.
I also liked his combination of tools better than the others. My
calculations showed he was competitive to less expensive. I might have
worried about the quality from his prices, but I can't fault a single tool
for quality. Yes, I might have saved $.95 on a hammer or some other really
common tool of which there are few in the kit. But you know what?? For
every job requirement there has been a tool at hand and every single tool has
done the job perfectly. I hate having to stop and run to the Hardware (15
miles here in the Mtns.) to get a hammer or whatever.
At Oshkosh I met him and his crew in person, and all...that's all of the
people in the booth had the same great "Van's builders" attitude. That is
what makes a good relationship in my book. How different can the cost be
over 18 months?? $50? Not worth the potential of "why should I care"
aggravation with someone else.
The pneumatic squeezer is a terrific bargain. My wife (nice birthday
present, huh?) could have saved over $100 had she known it would be on sale
for Osh. Oh well, I had already used it building by then and wouldn't give
it up. Avery also sends the hand squeezer with a different jaw size so that
you automatically then have two interchangable jaw sizes.
Only thing missing, a unibit, a rivet cutter (practice riveting) and the
arbor for the Scothbrite wheel. (The Scotchbrite wheel comes with the kit, is
expensive and worth every $$). Even those aren't necessary, just really the
right tool for the job required.
