I'm getting ready to build the jig for my HS, and decided to look
ahead a bit, knowing that this jig would become the stand for my wings
when I get that far. I came across an inconsistency that I wonder if
anyone else has noticed...
In the Preview plans book, Figure 6.1 says the spacing between the
uprights should be '105-109"'. Later on, Drawing 12A says the spacing
should be 'Approx. 114"'.
I'd be really curious to know how people who built their uprights 109"
apart are doing trying to squeeze an extra 5" into that space...
Any guidance appreciated,
Rob Prior

Hi Rob,
I built my jig 114" as per the drawings. I then put in two
additional uprights to close it down for the HS. I used two to
utilize my already established center-line. Works great.

If you are planning on buying a QB kit, do you still need the jig for the
wings?

If you re-read those areas you'll notice that the measurements are for different aircraft models. 105-109" is for the RV6 - 114" is for the RV7 & 8 they could have done a better job of getting all of the information in the same place.

I realize they are for different planes, but with so few places in the
preview plans specifically mentioning the -7 line, you almost have to
assume that what's written is correct, even when it mentions another
model.
Is the -7 descended in any simply understandable way from other RV
models? ie. are the wings identical to the -8, the fuselage same as
the -9, tail from the -6, etc.?

Yes, the 7 has the 8 wing and the 9 fuselage. The August issue of EAA's Sport Aviation magazine has a big write up about the RV7 the cover even say 8+9=7 on it :-)

I built mine at 114" on the advice of others. Can't remember if I called
Vans about it or just picked it up on the list.
