In working towards assembling my HS skeleton, it appears I will be close on
edge distances for HS602 (forward spar channels) near the center of the HS
(above HS405).
I measure about 3/16" (minimum edge distance for 3/32" rivets) from the
current rivet location (marked through the skin) to the bottom lip / edge
of the HS602. I have bent the HS405 flanges as much as I can ..... it
appears to me that the HS405 is about 1/8" too long if I really wanted
things to be perfect.
After spending this weekend drilling out rivets in the forward spar and
rebending the HS610/614, I want everything to be right before I drill /
rivet.
Have the rest of you guys found the center line of the forward spar to be
slightly higher than the predrilled holes in the skin near HS405? SHould I
worry about this enough to take the HS405's off the rear spar (which would
require taking the rear spar off the Jig and drilling out the rivets) and
modify (remove / refabricate) the HS405 flanges?
Also, I guess you don't worry about the edge distances on the rib flange
that sits underneath the HS602 channel .... where all three layers of metal
are fastened (skin, HS602, rib). I think this would make the job almost
impossible if you needed to maintain the edge distance on the rib too on
this one particular rivet. But, I might be wrong. Opinions?

If it were me I would check the edge distances and if you have 3/16" then go for it. If not then call Van's.
I had the same problem that you are talking about with that inboard rivet where the forward spar channel and the inboard mainrib come together. There was no way for me to get the edge distance thereso I called Van's and was told that if I could drill a hole without busting through an edge then put a rivet in there, but if I broke through an edge just forget the rivet altogether and leave the hole there for the empennage fairing to cover up later. He said that there were enough rivets in that area and that missing one there wouldn't hurt anything.
