There I was last evening, pounding away on the HS skins with the trusty
Avery C-frame tool loaded with dimple dies, when I encountered the last two
holes at the forward end of the middle rib. I really had to pull to open
up the fold in the metal to get the holes seated on the male dimple die,
and the metal was curved enough doing this that after whacking the dimple,
there was a shallow smiley caused by the outside edge of the dimple die.
How have other folks solved this problem? Is there any way to get that
part of the skins opened up and flattened so a normal dimple will result
(without messing up the nice factory leading edge bend)?
There goes that OSH grand champion award (unless I do some cosmetic magic
with fiberfil before painting...)

You'll be using some sort of filler beforeyour project is completed. I can almost guarantee that.
In the future, you can use pop rivet dies for these types of areas. I think both Avery's and Cleveland carry the pop rivet dies.

So that's what those pop rivet dies are for! I already got a set of them with the Avery RV tool kit and didn't even know I should be using them. (Thought somehow they were dies for pop rivets. Duh.)
Thanks. As they say, experience is one of those things you get just after you need it.

Haven't used the pop rivet dies yet but, Iwas under the impression that on .032, it would be tough to get a full dimple with pop rivet dies. I was able to get my HS done by holding the skin flat on the dimple table with one hand, using my head to hold the skin out ofthe way while I "whacked" it with my other hand! Being a contortionist definitely helps :-)

The pop rivet dies will work on .032 but you'll have to give it a little harder squeeze. It might leave deep enough marks on the nail that you'll have to change nails or, as I do, use the scotch brite wheel to buff the burrs on the nail and go about my business.
The other option is, of course, to countersink them. If it's only one or two holes I'd use the dies, much more than that and I'm whipping out the countersink cage.

I've used the dimple dies on .032 skins and they work fine. Orndorff at one
point mentions giving the hole a turn or two with the speed deburr tool on
the shop head side of a flush rivet after you dimple. He says the rivet sits
better. I tried it both ways and I think it does help get them really flush.
