Home -> RV-7 and RV-7A topic: Best Prices on clecos?

Author: steve@... Time: Mon Aug 20, 2001 5:49 am PDT Link

I purchased mine at Brown Aviation Tool Supply. To my knowledge they
have the best price... $.31 each:

BTW, How many did you order and how many do you think you need?

Disclaimer: I don't even have my tail kit yet, but have been
amassing information on tools in anticipation.

A six-time RV builder (Brian Carr, for any of you who may know
him) told me that you don't need the number of Cleco's that Vans
calls out in his tool list. Brian recommends that you only buy 200
of the 3/32" and 100 of the 1/8", not 325 and 175 as
recommended.

He says that he bought the recommended numbers, and he
can't recall ever using more than "about half" of the clecos he
had at any one time. He's built three RV-4's, an RV-6A, an RV-8,
and is now building a Rocket, so he's run the gamut in terms of
kit complexity.

Anyone else have different thoughts?

The number of Cleco's you need depend on several things.  The fact the Brian Carr has built so many planes and only needs 200 at any one time, tells me that he has built several planes and knows how to maximize his usage of tools and build efficiently.  Most of us on the other hand, haven't built any airplanes before and don't always know the best wayto approach things.

Do you plan on building one wing at a timeor two?  Big difference. Will you be using one cleco every other hole of every two holes or every third hole?  Again, big difference.  With the newer kits where everything is prepunched using cleco's every other hole might bea waste of time and cleco's.

In my case I built both wings at the same time and I like to hold off riveting until I'm positive I won't need to pull a particular piece of skin off "just one more time to get at something".  I orderedthe recommended number of cleco's  and while the 1/8 cleco's has been fine, I got another 300 or so 3/32 cleco's from another local builder in order to build the parts in the sequence that I did.

On my -6 there is no way that only 200 3/32 cleco's would have been sufficient.  Take a look at my web site to get an ideaof what two wings in progress looks like.  Take a look toward the middle and bottom of the page to see what I mean.

Your right I found the ad later that night they are the cheapest, but I needed some more tools so I just ordered them from Cleveland. I had about 60, so I ordered another 100 for now I'll order more as I need them.

Bobby,
I have found the best online prices at Brown Tools. They are also some
of the highest quality ones I have found. They are usually 31 cents each.

Take Care,
Max

They have also put together an "RV builders toolkit" for me that is
significantly cheaper than Avery Tools.

Speak to Mike Brown on 1-800-587-3883, he is a true gentleman.
