Folks, as I was drilling my HS skeleton to match my skins this weekend, I
realized something.
I already riveted my Skeleton together around the center rib (where
HS607/HS602/HS608 meet). On the bottom / back side of the HS602 spar
channel, the rib flange and the spar flange overlap. This means that when
I dimple the skeleton, I am going to dimple two aluminum sheets (rib and
spar channel) in one operation. (This is the place where the rivet will go
through 3 thicknesses of metal (skin, spar, rib)).
Has this (dimpling multiple thicknesses) caused anyone any problems?
Surely I'm not the first. If you follow Van's instructions, the skeleton
is all riveted together before dimpling. So far, I haven't riveted the
HS404/405/602 nor the HS606/602. Of course, the HS404 is not riveted until
after HS607 has been riveted in place.
Hopefully, I'm concerned over nothing!
By the way, I tried wrapping a string / cord around HS607 and using it to
help position the rib as I was drilling it with the skin. I think this
hint was covered in the "Bunny's Guide to RV building." It worked great!

You can countersink the HS-602, in fact the manual says this is the preferred method on page 6-17, fig. 6-10.

I just sold my completed RV9A empennage kit in favor of the RV7
thinking the new 7 kit was match drilled as is the 9 kit.
In reading most of the 600 some messages on this forum, while I wait
for Vans to send the new empennage kit, it seems many of you are
building a 7 and drilling ribs. Is that because you've switched from a
6, or is the 7 empennage kit not match drilled?

David,
In the 7 emp kit, the skin is punched, you drill the skin to the ribs.

Thanks, Robert.
I guess when Van's said
"In the "matched hole" RV-7/7A kit, a computerized punch press locates
and punches all the rivet holes during manufacture, so the builder can
pull the parts out of the box, align the holes and begin assembly
immediately."
they did not mean it.
The RV7 kit is not the most advanced kit they have, the RV9A is.

My understanding is that they will start sending match drilled emp. kits for the 7 as soon as all the non match drilled kits have been sent out, or as soon as they get everything setup to do the match drilling on the 7. Not there yet!
Don't care anymore, I'm almost done with my emp. kit :-)

Does this mean we will have match drilled ribs on the wing kit?

Yep the wings are match drilled with the exception of one wing rib. You can literally take the wings out of the box flute them and cleco them together. I would spend some time deburringthem though. :-)
