I'm about to close the Vertical Stabilizer and wondering about any
electrical I might need to the top of the tail. I think I'm going to
put in some "just in case I need them" wires, but I would like to
know what, if anything (electrical) might end up on top of the tail?
I don't seem to recall seeing beacons on RVs - I'm not sure why they
aren't there or if I just wasn't paying attention? What about strobe
or nav or?

You might put an antenna up there, but I wouldn't recommend putting a
strobe there. I had a rudder-top strobe on my 182, with a half-red,
half-white lens on it. The tail is actually above the line of sight
through the rear window on a Skylane, but even with that the red flashes
were extremely distracting at night. With the all-around bubble visibility
of an RV, a tail strobe would be a major irritant unless it was blacked out
for forward viewing, negating a fair amount of its visibility enhancing
function.

As I understand it, Strobes means you don't need the
beacon and therefore the nav light/strobe/white
position light units you can put at the end of the
wing mean you don't need the white position light on
the tail OR a beacon, only restriction is the units
must be visible from the tail.
The requirements are somewhere in the regs, a friend
just got his pink slip and the inspector said these
things above but it is best to check the regs.
His plane has the nice combo units I described and a
white light in the tail and he built up a spot on the
wingtips so they were visible from behind the plane.
The DAR said he didn't need the white tail light...
The only wiring in his tail was for the elev trim and
the position light in the tail (rudder fairing).
He put his ELT ant on the last bulkhead but this is
easily done after all is assembled (but the FAA does
not recommend the common practice of putting the ELT
ant under the horiz stab fairing).
Less weight the better...

I will be basing my aircraft at a very busy commercial airport and
may consider installing a red beacon on top of the horizontal stab in
addition to the strobes. The white strobes can be very distracting
to other aircraft on the ground especially airline traffic. I think
this is a good suggestion, I personally will wait until towards the
end of the project and assess how much night flying I think I may be
doing, but at least I will have the option.
