Home -> RV-7 and RV-7A topic: VS-405?

Author: Bobby Hester <bhester@...> Time: Fri Aug 31, 2001 8:28 pm PDT Link

Working on the VS. VS-405 has the circle indention like the VS-404 which
has three of them, but the three on the 404 have the centers removed,
the one on the 405 is solid and the center is not removed. Is this
correct, is that how it is suppose to be? I just thought I'd check. I
reallize it is there to stiffen the rib, just seems like they would have
removed the center, as they did on the 404.

Anytime you see a rib with the indented circle with a round portion of
material removed, this is referred to as a lightening hole... as to lighten
the airframe.  Go ahead and remove the flat portion of the circular area.  Do
not remove the outer indented ring.

General note: Please everyone out there... pay attention to small ways to
save weight like this.  Don't add things that are not functional in some way.
 Truly, the lighter you build this airplane, the better you will like it.

It is widely accepted that a light and low powered RV is more fun to fly than
a heavy, high powered one.  So just think what a light and high powered one
will be like...
