Home -> RV-7 and RV-7A topic: Help with AKZO/Dexter epoxy primer

For anyone else out there using AKZO/Dexter 2-part epoxy primer...
I've only sprayed 2 batches or parts so far but each one has turned
out significantly different. The first batch I sprayed ended up
having kind of a glossy, epoxy/varnish-like finish to it. The second
batch (where I thought I actually had the gun set up better and it
seemed to spray smoother) came out with a much more matte finish, and
is also greener in color than the first batch. How should this stuff
look and feel when it's done right? Any ideas what may have made the
difference between the 2 batches? Also, neither batch seemed to have
nice even color from the Aloding - both were pretty blotchy. Is this
normal?

Thanks.

All my AKZO has come out with a matte finish, the solids do tend to
settle out so it needs to me mixed often. The alodining I've done by
wiping it on has been blotchy, the smaller parts I've dipped are
pretty evenly coated.

I had the exact same results. First was shiny, second batch was matte. The
only difference between the two was it was colder and windy on the first
batch and sunny and no wind on the second. My first battle with alodine
came out blotchy like yours. On the second one I scrubbed harder on my
parts with the alumiprep and was careful not to touch the parts. It worked
a lot better, very uniform. The only problem I had was the first part
turned very deep gold and with each new part it got less and less gold.
Finally the last part had barely any gold hue. I suspect it was either my
scotchbrite pad was wearing our during the alumiprep or the Alodine lost its
potency. If anyone has any suggestions I am all ears.
