I'm in the process of making the bending brake for my rudder T.E. Will I
be using a brake for the Flaps and Ailerons? If so, I need to make the
brake 5' long. If not, I can go with 4'. I'm having a heck of a time
finding any straight boards .... so I may make it out of laminated 3/4"
ply. Thoughts and suggestions welcomed!

Ellis,

I used a resonably straight 2X8 and cut it down the middle with a
table saw. Then I attached the door hinge hardware on the 8" side of
the 2X8. This provides a "perfectly" straight joint. You only need
to put the trailing edge in the 2" opening.

You will need the brake for the rudder, elevators, and if you are
building a standard kit, the wing control surfaces. The 3/4 ply is
probably not stong enough unless you double or triple the thickness.
A fairly large force is required to make the bends. I would suggest
building the brake as specified in the plans or you will probably
build two brakes (like me).

Ellis,

I was thinking along the same lines... wondering what length to make the
brake (one brake for all trailing edges in the project) and thinking of
laminating some 3/4" plywood. I get so tired of going through pallets of
"premium" wood at Home Depot looking for those perfectly flat boards. My
problem is that I don't know much about laminating and was wondering what
glue to use. Will Elmer's wood glue do the job, or is there something
better for the task? I can just see myself spending time cutting out two
boards, gluing them together and having them warp because I used the wrong
glue.

Lately I feel like I've spent more time in woodworking than in sheet
metal... making jigs, tables, etc. I just finished a real nice portable
dimpling tabletop made from 2x2s, 3/4" plywood, and hardboard. I thought I
could get through the project without one, but it sure makes dimpling
easier and improves the quality of the dimples by keeping the sheet metal
flat around the dimple.

You won't find 'premium' lumber at home depot. You
need to go to a lumber supply house like Huttig
building products. Also, if you know someone who has
a planer and jointer, you can easily straighten your 2
X 8 for your brake.

A suggestion which worked for me:

Find a reasonable 2x10 at a quality lumber yard Have the lumber yard run it
through the planner Rip it down the middle to make two 2x5s The surfaces
will mate perfectly
