Home -> RV-7 and RV-7A topic: Fiberglass tips

I'm basically finished with the emp kit. Finished quicker than I
thought and didn't order the wings early enough in the process. I
was thinking about playing with the fiberglass tips and was curious
if anyone else had worked the tips and would like to pass on some
tips. Don't know if I can stand not doing something for 3 weeks
waiting on the wings.

Thanks in advance,
Doug

A couple of lessons that I learned...

1) Mount the tips on the vertical stab and rudder with the two
bolted together in proper alignment. This will avoid any
misalignment between the two tips when it's all together.

2) DON'T fill the gap between the aluminum and the tip with filler
and then sand smooth. It may look nice initially but it will crack
eventually and possibly chip the paint as it does.

3) I plan to allow for all my tips to be removable. DON'T use #8 or
#6 screws as the plans indicate. Use the smaller #4 screws. They
are more than sufficient to hold the piece on. In the long run, they
are not more work than using pop rivets and filling the pop rivets
later with filler.
