When I squeezed the right elevator skin in the brake I got a nasty
bulge/crease in the trailing edge. The cause was two pair of
stiffeners which were too close to the trailing edge. When the metal
dowel pressed against these stiffeners, the damage was done. Maybe a
wooden dowel would have lessened or eliminated the damage but the
main problem was poor measuring. The worse part was that I was really
proud of my rivet pattern.

My plan was to throw things, cry, drink heavily, then order new
parts. I only need to order the parts now.

Used a wooden dowel on the rudder and did the same thing. Didn't have
any booze so I just cried.

My instructions said nothing about the use of a dowel rod. I didn't use
one, and they came out great.

I agree with NOT using a dowel. I've done the rudder
and right elevator so far with excellent results.
Before I did the rudder, I called Van's and questioned
them about using a dowel and they said not to use one.

One of the things to watch out for is where you place the trailing
edge in the hinged boards. If you put the trailing edge too far back
along the hinge line, then you will put too much pressure on the
trailing edge and possibly damage it. If you place the part a little
further out per the drawing, then the trailing edge should bend just
fine without a dowel.

I agree on not using the dowel. Just take your time and put the bend in with
a series of pushes on the brake. Don't try to make it all in one big heave.
All of my control surfaces have been completed without the dowel and are
perfect and straight.
