RE: TURBINE POWER
Check out WWW.ATPCOINC.COM
Wow what a neat rig that would be on the front of an
RV!
It is my understanding that a Lycoming 200 HP puts out
only about 130 HP at 12,000 feet due to thinner air.
If you had a turbo charged Lycoming, you could get
higher HP at 12,000 feet – since it would compress the
air going into the engine to compensate for the
thinner air.
With a turbine such as ATP’s model 6.5, you don’t have
this problem since it has a compressor – at least that
is my understanding of the situation.
I wonder if an RV will go 200 MPH at 12,000 feet if
the engine only puts out 130 HP or so.
How fast might it go if you had a full 200 HP at
12,000 feet with ATP’s 6.5 Turbine?
I read somewhere that the expected cost of this ATP
model 6.5 is about $20,000 – about $16,000 cheaper
than a complete 200 HP Lycoming with all the goodies.
I think in time they will have some pretty neat
turbines available for RV’s – thank God for the
ingenuity of the experimental aircraft community.
Cessna’s cheapest turbine is a couple of million I
believe. How about an RV-11 with one of these turbines
mounted on each wing!
