Never heard any comments on the e-mail I sent in about
Turbine power - just wanted to make sure it got
posted. I thought it was pretty neat. Love to hear
what you all think of the idea. I'll probably still
go with a Lycoming - but it's neat to think about what
we may have available a few years down the road.
RE: TURBINE POWER
Check out WWW.ATPCOINC.COM
Wow what a neat rig that would be on the front of an
RV!
It is my understanding that a Lycoming 200 HP puts out
only about 130 HP at 12,000 feet due to thinner air.
If you had a turbo charged Lycoming, you could get
higher HP at 12,000 feet – since it would compress the
air going into the engine to compensate for the
thinner air.
With a turbine such as ATP’s model 6.5, you don’t have
this problem since it has a compressor – at least that
is my understanding of the situation.
I wonder if an RV will go 200 MPH at 12,000 feet if
the engine only puts out 130 HP or so.
How fast might it go if you had a full 200 HP at
12,000 feet with ATP’s 6.5 Turbine?
I read somewhere that the expected cost of this ATP
model 6.5 is about $20,000 – about $16,000 cheaper
than a complete 200 HP Lycoming with all the goodies.
I think in time they will have some pretty neat
turbines available for RV’s – thank God for the
ingenuity of the experimental aircraft community.
Cessna’s cheapest turbine is a couple of million I
believe. How about an RV-11 with one of these turbines
mounted on each wing!

Hi Clifford,
I saw an ad or other information on the ATP unit a few months ago and
had them send me a brochure on it. It does look interesting, but
considering my low level of knowledge, all I know is how cool it
sounds - turboprops are the exact engine sound I used to make in the
back of my parent's car as we passed airports. You start low pitch
and then go higher as rpm's increase...very nice!
Also, there is an electric engine prototype being studied. I think
Hoot Gibson is involved with that project.

The Electric referred to is (I believe) the Fuel Cell
powered plane project. There was info at EAA Oshkosh
2001 and in Sport Aviation, a blurb about this.
The first stages are to be powered mostly by Lithium
Ion batteries and to, by stages, place more and more
dependence on the fuel cell (somewhere round 2005).
Personnally, this is quite interesting to me and I
hope that this technology develops quickly.
Though I can't imagine it will be mature enough for my
RV, I would love to have an eectric RV someday.

Read the fine print. Fuel burn is outrageous. 2750
prop rpm yields 180 hp with 13.4 gph fuel burn. That's
about 3 hours with no reserve. 180 hp at 12,000 feet
would be great and probably pull an RV close to or
exceed Vne. Not so great. AT 2650 prop rpm, 120 hp and
10.7 gph and your not any better off than a Lyc. AND
it's still an unproven design. I don't know about the
rest of you, but I want a reliable, efficient
X-country RV.
Just my 2 pennies,
Scott
