A quick tip for those of you who haven't built your left elevator yet:

Put a small nutplate (#6 or #4) in the inboard end rib near to where
the trim tab spar is riveted to the end rib. The exact location is
not important but keep it within a couple of inches of the spar.

When you build your trim tab, make sure you cut the hinge without the
pin in it. Use the full length of the pin to bend it around the
inboard end of the rib and down to the nutplate. Then, take one eye
of the hinge and make a tab that can be screwed to the nutplate. Use
this one eyed tab to terminate your hinge pin. This is a simple and
clean way to secure the pin.

This idea has been around for some time and there are a number of
builder web sites which detail this idea, but I don't recall them at
the moment. Since I was just finishing up my empennage this weekend,
I thought I'd share with anyone who hadn't seen it yet.

Happy building.

Randy, could you explain your elevator tip further. As I understand
it, you mount the nutplate on the inside of the E-605 rib near where
it joins with the E-606 trim tab spar. The trim tab hinge pin is not
long enough to fasten to that nut plate. My hinge may only be 1/2 to
3/4 inch to long. What am I missing? Trying to finish up the left
elevator. Waiting for the wing kit.

check out the bottom of this page for an example of how I think Randy might be securing his pin. It's how I secured mine and it works great.

You will have to order more hinge materal to be able to make the longer
pin, I plan on doing this also next time I have to order something from
Vans. They have the hinge material list on thier web order page in
various lengths.

Mike responded with his web site. Yes, I failed to mention that you
need more hinge material. I had a bunch left over from my -6. You
can just wait until you get your fuselage and/or your finish kit. I
know that in the finish kit, you'll get a bunch of hinge for the
cowling but you will replace the pin with a smaller diameter one, so
there's no need to order any unless it bugs you and you want to
finish it now.
